The Natural Resources Council of Maine, who are advocating for wind power, are selling wind watts. Wondering what a wind watt was, I clicked on the link and seems like they have "partnered" with (in the old days, we would have called this getting in bed with) the Maine Interfaith Power and Light, a group of "faith communities" that sell carbon offsets (wind watts) at 20 bucks a wack. One wind watt for travel equals 1,000 miles. One wind watt for electricity equals 1,000 kWh. These carbon offsets are from wind generated by the Mars Hill Wind "Farm". (I wish they would stop calling these things farms.)
So, I am curious, how does one spend wind watts?
Can I put one in my CMP bill and deduct it from my total bill?
The next time I fill up, can I hand the cashier my wind watts and say, "Take it out of this."?

Who gets the money from the sale of these wind watts?

Seems like the flock is getting fleeced again.

Does anyone have a breakdown of where each "wind watts" dollar goes to? On the surface at least, it sounds like someone is probably making a lot of money preying on people's fears and using their religious organizations to imbue the thing with legitimacy.

The electrical industry changed considerably with deregulation. There are now 3 components involved, the generator, the distributor and the broker. Interfaith Power and Light is a broker. They make deals with the other two to market electricity to us. Wind watts is a marketing program to sell " tags " to people for promotional value. It is like trading cards.
From their sale, the broker and the wind company will share the income,at what ratio, I do not know.
The customer is effectively promoting wind power with the purchase, a private subsidy to the wind industry, if you will.
Our state government has purchased such " tags " using taxpayer money. Many elitists schools, such as Harvard, also buy them.
Interestingly, Nstar of Massachusetts, a broker of electricity, has this program running and have sold them to only 1% of their customer base of 800,000.
The purchase of these " tags " at 2 cents a kilowatt is above your current electric costs.
It appears to me, the brokers are manipulating the industry to favor wind. They also offer a Hydro/Wind combination which is a higher cost than the standard rate.
With the " greenhouse initiative " , a tax is being assessed on gas and coal plants, effectively raising their costs.
The wind "tag" concept , along with the carbon tax are mechanisms to put more wind generated electricity into the grid where we all get our electricity. Just because Harvard buys this promotion, it doesn't bring any more wind generated electricity to campus than it does to it's neighbors.
I suppose, like playing cards, once wind is dead, they will have nostalgic value.
The NRCM is putting itself into risky waters. This organization was initiated by the idea of protecting Maine's environment. Most of their promotion of wind power now centers on "windfall" tax revenue to the local communities. They are stepping across their bounds. Only 60% of their own membership are believing wind power is a cause they should pursue.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
