Federal Regulator’s Approval for Gas Plant Queue-Jumping Sparks Outrage

Inside Climate News

Critics argue the federal decision props up costly fossil fuels power plants, does little to ensure grid reliability and undercuts state clean energy goals.

Solar developers worry new conservation tax would render renewables unsustainable in Utah

Tensions between Republican lawmakers and solar energy developers came into the public eye when a House committee debated a bill that expanded the funding mechanisms for the state’s Species Protection Account on Thursday.

While most agreed that the intentions of HB378 were noble, as it would broaden…

Solar Does NOT Suppress Market Prices and This is the Proof.

ISO-NE, the keeper of a competitive electricity market, rightfully decided "front of the meter" solar should enter the day ahead market with bids for their output, just like all other resources.

So, what is the real, market value of solar,

First, consider it only brings generation to market during off peak hours, nevertheless, natural gas-fired generation generally sets the wholesale price during off peak and on peak hours.

In order to be…

There Needs to be a Re-Examination of Carbon Dioxide as a Killing Gas

"The average residential CMP Delivery amount includes about $15 per month in non-CMP costs to support Maine public policy initiatives including net energy billing subsidies, low-income assistance and energy efficiency."
That message came with my electric bill. How much is too much to reduce greenhouse gases from the atmosphere?  As I listen to people telling of the dangers of carbon dioxide, and how this substance must be eradicated from electricity production,…

Solar Effects on Grid Operations.

Two graphs

First graph tracks the daily load or the number of megawatts of generation required throughout the day

Second graph tracks the price to supply electricity for this load in the first graph

It is unusual for the price to be higher for the morning peak than the evening peak, as the morning peak load is smaller than the evening peak load. This oddity has been happening more and more frequently and is especially pronounced during the recent…

The Need for New England Pipeline Expansions is All Too Real

The cold weather we are experiencing is causing wholesale electric prices to soar due to choking off natural gas supplies to generation plants. 33 out of the last 35 days have seen prices over $100 and during some hours, over $200 per megawatt (10 cents to 20 cents per kilowatt).

Heavyweights Acquiring Energy Assets in Maine and New England

Constellation Energy, the nation’s largest nuclear power plant operator, has agreed to buy another electricity producer, Calpine, for $16.4 billion, a deal that shows how fast-rising demand for power, partly a result of the data centers being built for artificial intelligence, is having far-reaching effects on the economy

Included in this sale are 3 natural gas-fired plants in New…

They Lied About Wind and Solar Lowering Rates and Climatic Conditions Raising Rates

NOTICE HOW THE WHOLESALE MARKET COSTS GO UP AND DOWN AS THESE COSTS ARE VERY CLOSELY DEPENDENT ON WEATHER CONDITIONS AND THE AVAIIBILITLY OF NATURAL GAS. MAN HAS NO CONTROL OF THE WEATHER; HOWEVER, MAN DOES HAVE CONTROL OF NATURAL GAS SUPPLIES AND FLOWS TO GENERATION PLANTS.

ALSO NOTICE HOW THE SEPARATION BETWEEN WHOLESALE COSTS AND RETAIL RATES HAVE INCREASED OVER TIME WITH THE ADDITION OF GROWING INTERMITTENT WIND AND SOLAR SUBSIDIES ADDED TO…

Storage Costs, Coal Versus Battery

On-Site Fuel Storage: Billions Better than Batteries

Coal offers on-site fuel storage for a fraction of the cost of battery storage. According to EIA data, the average coal plant has more than 60 days of fuel on-site, which means the average coal plant has 1,440 hours of storage on-site. This is an enormous amount of energy storage when we consider that many grid-scale batteries have …

Net Energy Billing, Maine Lawmakers Attempt to Fool All the People, All of the Time.

Net Energy Billing is perhaps the most contested and controversial program ever to impact the electricity customers of Maine.
The Legislature has expanded NEB so now it is incredibly expensive to the 86% of Maine residential customers who wish not to participate but know damn well they are paying for something that is arguably UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!

Net Energy Billing goes way back. In a report by the PUC, January 15,2009…

"Time of Use" Electricity Pricing Means Getting Out of Bed Earlier, Getting the Electricity Humming Earlier, and Paying a Bigger Monthly Bill.

What a dilemma.

The Maine PUC wants us to go "time of use" so we will change of behavior.

These cold mornings are causing the daily peak price of electricity to occur at 7:00 am as heat setting are turned back up as we awaken.

Now, you have to get to work, so getting up later to avoid the peak price is not an option, so you must get up earlier, but you, nevertheless, are going to turn up the thermostat because it is cold.

Now the peak load happens earlier and…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
