The wind industry is booming in Kansas, but tax incentives that state officials used to lure foreign wind-farm investors may have hurt rural schools. The incentives sparked a decade-long wind boom in the state, which is one of only five that gets more than 20 percent of its power from wind (the others are Iowa, Oklahoma, and the Dakotas).
But because of those exemptions, almost $630 million of wind-farm equipment will never be taxed. If it were, it would generate around $82 million a year for the 24 rural counties with wind farms. “Of that amount, more than $32 million a year would go to rural school districts in those counties, according to revenue-department estimates.

I can't stand it. I haven't even asked what the end result has been here in Clifton. In March, the town meeting voted to give the Select Board the authority to write up, enact and manage any damn TIF agreement with Pisgah LLC that the Board in it's wisdom deems appropriate. All I know is that my property taxes didn't take a big tumble this year. Betcha Pisgah didn't pay through the nose. Besides all those sweet deals they get from the federal and state governments. Surprised Eddington and Holden aren't up in arms that the School District isn't benefiting from the millions of dollars in new taxable property in Clifton. Oh that's right, we voted not to tax Pisgah cause we wanted to help them with Tax Increment Financing. What stupidity. Don't help finance schools, sheriff's department, county government, help finance a corporation out of Austria and a few local skimmers. Lot of tough and savvy old Mainers rolling in their graves over this fiasco.
