Maine Democrat Policies That Create a Never-ending Lifetime of Expensive Electricity
Don’t expect electricity prices to come down anytime soon in Maine, even with the federal government recission of wind and solar projects and subsidies.
Entrenched in Maine laws are two policies that will cause prices to spike as they are tied to an acceleration of wind, solar and battery installations.
RGGI, a never-ending carbon tax on natural gas-fired, coal and oil-fired electric generating plants, can raise wholesale prices by as much as 30% and with states like Massachusetts setting policies to eliminate fossil fuels from reaching Maine by constructing much needed pipeline upgrades, the carbon tax will naturally follow economic principles that prices increase as allowable emissions of carbon dioxide are lessened each year. This program has no end date; it will never be sunset without cooperation from all New England States.
The troubling aspect of this program is that it is regional, involving all the states enrolled in ISO-NE operations. Even with Maine ending their participation in RGGI, New England wholesale prices will be affected by other states using ISO-NE as the wholesale marketer.
Maine represents just 9% of the ISO-NE market, so Maine is overwhelmed by policies upheld in other New England States.
Nevertheless, Maine can rebate ratepayers of all the costs of RGGI instead of gifting the money over to Efficiency Maine Trust (EMT) to use it to push EVs, EV charging stations and heat pumps. The many years that EMT has promoted energy efficiency as a path to lower electricity costs has proven to be gaslighting propaganda. It favors the few who do not mind taking from others and some of these “few” are very large companies.
During the last legislative session, a proposal to return just some of this RGGI money to ratepayers was rejected by Democrats on the EUT Committee.
The chances of Democratic controlled states in New England undoing RGGI and discontinuing the assault on fossil fuels is next to unthinkable. The only option to escape RGGI costs is to unenroll from ISO-NE, which is not impossible; Maine was an autonomous electricity producer/consumer back before the Angus King Governing years. New Hampshire has tossed around the idea of removal from ISO-NE, recently.
The other policy raising electricity costs is the Renewable Energy Credit boondoggle, where wind, solar and battery projects receive direct payments for every kilowatt hour of generated electricity they produce that enters the grid. Like RGGI, this program has no sunset provision.
The likelihood that Maine is ever going to be totally powered by “renewables” is zero, BUT because this program is ill-conceived to achieve 100% “renewables” by 2040 along with the federal government shutdown policies, Renewable Energy Credit costs will skyrocket.
Everyone knows RGGI and REC are destined to be failed causes, but how long must the people of Maine be ruined by the expense of these gimmicks? The answer is how much longer will Maine people put up with Democrat Party Control of the Maine Government?

Any US tariffs on the European supply of wind systems would greatly increase their turnkey capital costs/MW and their electricity costs/ kWh.

Almost the entire supply of the wind projects would be:
1) designed and made in Europe,
2) then transported across the Atlantic Ocean by European specialized ships,
3) then unloaded at new, taxpayer-financed, $500-million storage/pre-assembly/staging/barge-loading areas,
4) then barged to European specialized erection ships for erection of the windmill systems.
5) The financing would be mostly by European pension funds, that pay benefits to European retirees.

Hundreds of people in each seashore state would have jobs during the erection phase
The other erection jobs would be by specialized European people, mostly on cranes and ships
Hundreds of people in each seashore state would have long-term O&M jobs, using mostly European spare parts, during the 20-y electricity production phase.

Conglomerates owned by Euro elites would finance, build, erect, own and operate almost all of the 30,000 MW of offshore windmills, providing work for many thousands of European workers for decades, and multi-$billion profits each year.

- A fleet of traditional power plants to provide electricity during 1) low-wind periods, 2) high-wind periods, when rotors are locked in place, and 3) low solar periods during mornings, evenings, at night, snow/ice on panels, which leads to more Btu/kWh, more CO2/kWh, more cost of about 2 c/kWh
- Pay W/S system Owners for electricity they could have produced, if not curtailed, about 1 c/kWh
- Importing electricity at high prices, when W/S output is low, 1 c/kWh
- Exporting electricity at low prices, when W/S output is high, 1 c/kWh
- Disassembly on land and at sea, reprocessing and storing at hazardous waste sites, about 2 c/kWh
Total ADDER 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 11 c/kWh

A high voltage cable would be hanging from each unit, until it reaches bottom, say about 200 to 500 feet.
The cables would need some type of flexible support system
There would be about 5 cables, each connected to sixty, 10 MW wind turbines, making landfall on the Maine shore, for connection to 5 substations (each having a 600 MW capacity, requiring several acres of equipment), then to connect to the New England HV grid, which will need $billions for expansion/reinforcement to transmit electricity to load centers, mostly in southern New England.

The IPCC, etc., has dubbed CO2 as having magical global warming power, based on its own “science”
The IPCC, etc., claims, CO2 acts as Climate Control Knob, that eventually will cause runaway Climate Change, if we continue using fossil fuels.
The IPCC, etc., denies the Little Ice Age, uses fraudulent computer temperature projections.

Governments proclaimed: Go Wind and Solar, Go ENERGIEWENDE, go Net zero by 2050, etc., and provided oodles of subsidies, and rules and regulations, and mandates, and prohibitions to make it happen.

Net-zero by 2050 to-reduce CO2 is a super-expensive suicide pact, to:
1) increase command/control by governments, and

BTW, the 1850 surface temp measurements were only in a few locations and mostly inaccurate, +/- 0.5 C.
The 1979-to-present temp measurements (46 years) cover most of the earth surface and are more accurate, +/- 0.25 C, due to NASA satellites.
