Please read and please get involved if you can and care about northern Maine. This has the potential to severely destroy the "quality of place" in northern Maine.

Excerpts:

The Northern Maine Renewable Energy Development Program, referred to in this section as "the program," is established to remove obstacles to the use of and to promote development of the substantial renewable energy resources in northern Maine...............

Promote energy equity with particular consideration given to the economic circumstances and opportunities in the State's socially vulnerable counties and communities. For the purposes of this subparagraph, "socially vulnerable counties and communities" means those counties and communities in the State containing populations that are disproportionately burdened by existing social inequities or lack the capacity to withstand new or worsening burdens....................

Request for proposals; generation connection line. On or before November 1, 2021, the commission shall issue a request for proposals for the development and construction of a 345-kilovolt double circuit generation connection line, or, in the commission's discretion, a transmission line or lines of greater capacity, to connect renewable energy resources located in northern Maine and developed pursuant to subsection 3 with the electric grid operated by the New England independent system operator, referred to in this section as "the ISO-New England system."

There must be some (D)s that care about spending less? There might be some (R)s too.

Any one taking bets on COVID 21?

The ENR committee voted today to blow off solar panel recycling despite the bill was a paraphrase from Jay Inslee's bill in 2017 in Washington State.

The fees would be too high and it might discourage people from purchasing new panels.

Profits before stewardship.

Absolutely correct, none can stand without our taxpayer subsidies, investors' production tax credits, political buyouts, etc...etc...

We have politicians and unfortunately, too many Mainers, who have drank the "cool-aid"...like the "Green, New Dealers!

There is no such thing as efficient or reliable wind or solar and neither one can stand on their own without state subsidies and federal subsidies or to put it bluntly, YOUR F___ING HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS that are being given away for something that in in 100 years could never give back 20% of the energy that it took to build, transport, erect and commission these useless wind mills. Doesn't anyone ever remember Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations from 1st year economics? Subsidies my ass, my money being pissed away on unreliable and incredibly environmentally harmful wind mills that are bird killers and downright ugly. WAKE THE F___ UP MAINER'S AND TAKE BACK THIS LAND!

You are absolutely correct about the money and under the table efforts, etc...but technically, Maine's wind power can be more reliable than much of Texas...depending on a few things.

You're attempting to use reason and logic. This industry's proliferation across beautiful Maine is about one thing -- money. Unfortunately, in order to follow the money you need a view under the table. Politicians, regulators, environmental groups and the media are all involved. They could care less about reason, logic or you.

Actually, yes, Maine can be more reliable than Texas, although, a number of conditions to be met.  I will note post the reasons here...but can explain in private conversations when appropriate...

Is there a good reason to expect wind power to be more reliable in Maine than it was in Texas?

How do you get through a stretch of bad weather? Energy storage. How much do you need? I suspect you don't know.

Several people have calculated that in order to provide firm power (99.97% available is the industry definition), one needs to have 400-800 watt hours' storage for each watt of average demand, depending upon location and the mix of wind and solar. I got data for California for a decade and computed the storage requirement is closer to 1300 watt hours.

An all-electric American economy would have 1,700 GWe average demand. At today's price and reliability (according to Tesla's catalogue), the cost would be only 4-8 TIMES TOTAL US GDP EVERY YEAR! Would Maine fare better?

The only way to get firm, reliable power is to exploit the safest thing humanity has ever done: Nuclear power.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
