Maine fishing industry wind protest on April 28 in Augusta

By Laurie Schreiber

Leaders in the lobster fishing industry are planning a “Protect the Gulf of Maine” rally in Augusta next week to highlight issues related to the development of offshore wind power.

“The fishermen are not opposed to renewable energy,” Virginia Olsen, a fourth-generation Stonington lobster fisherman who sits on the Maine Lobstering Union-Local 207 executive board, told Mainebiz by email. “But we are fighting for our iconic Maine way of life; not just our fishing heritage, but our communities, our neighbors, our future.”

The rally is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28, at the Augusta Civic Center, with guest speakers slated to talk at 10 a.m. They include Olsen; Maine State Senate President Troy Jackson; State Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham (District 136); Julie Rabinowitz on behalf of former Gov. Paul LePage; Vinalhaven Town Manager Andrew Dorr; Lobster 207 CEO Mike Yohe; Shucks Maine Lobster CEO John Hathaway; Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association Director of Community Programs Monique Coombs; and fishermen Christopher McIntire of Orr's Island, Jim Hanscom of Mount Desert Island, Richard Larrabee Jr. of Stonington, Clint Collamore of Waldoboro and Gerry Cushman of Port Clyde.

As the rally’s lead organizer, Olsen said she’s not sure how many participants to expect. However, she’s heard interest both from fishermen and the general community.

“We hear every day of more people who are coming,” she said. “I expect there to be a few hundred people.”

Word has been spreading by social media, word of mouth and signs posted along the coast. Planning meetings were held last weekend in Trenton, Harpswell and Warren.

Local 207 is part of the Protect the Gulf of Maine coalition.

The group calls offshore wind development “a threat to the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and our way of life in Maine.” It asks the Governor's Energy Office to complete an offshore wind “road map” before bringing large-scale projects to the Gulf of Maine.

A demonstration project with one turbine is scheduled to be installed off Monhegan Island and a larger project of up to 12 turbines is in the pipeline off Maine southern coast. A general oval-shaped location has been determined and the state is in the process of identifying a specific site.

Last month, fishermen in nearly 100 boats from the midcoast gathered in waters near Monhegan to protest the development of offshore wind energy infrastructure.

“Fishermen are concerned these research arrays, being new technology, will use the Gulf of Maine — which has been feeding the world for hundreds of years — as a research lab,” said Olsen.

Fishermen are also concerned about the potential proliferation of wind arrays in the middle of fishing zones, she added.

Good people out there like these fisherman, busting their asses for their families, have little grasp on how evil and corrupt this industry really is.

This will give them a heads up......The green criminals don't want you to know how terrible wind energy really is so they hide putrid production numbers in a so called energy mix based upon imaginary numbers put into insider contracts. With wind energy production, nothing and I mean nothing is verified. Sort of like the votes with the 2020 presidential election.

So when mandates, like in CA, call for electric utilities to purchase 50% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2030. What it really means is that the consumer will foot the bill for the illusion of 50% renewable energy, including Production Tax Credits, but will still be receiving energy primarily from other sources.

The Climate Council is part of a Dem/Prog SOCIALIST takeover scam.

It uses false enviro-hysteria, including:

1) The Climate and Green-Energy frauds
2) The full lockdown for Covid-19 fraud
3) The illogical linking of linking these frauds (such as: to solve Covid 19, we have to solve Climate Change)
4) The paid-and-planned terrorism, by Antifa and BLM, is condoned/encouraged by Dem/Progs,
5) The universal mail-in ballot USA election scam

ALL OF IT is false and fraudulent.
It is all part of the “Great Reset and Remake of America”.

The Climate-and-Covid scares are false crises, concocted by Dem/Prog wolves to stampede the sheep.

The tactics used by the Dem/Prog GW propagandists are straight out of Lenin’s playbook.

The UN Climate-gate emails, of a few years ago, provided further evidence of GW deceit.

Those folks do not debate.
They shout down dissent.
They seek to harm those who disagree with them – straight out of Lenin.

The purported “science” of GW catastrophes has been disproved many times, over the decades.
Everyone of the warmists’ very-scary predictions, some 80 or so since 1970, have failed to happen.

The most objective measure of scientific competence is the ability to correctly predict.
The climate fraudsters have been 100% wrong to date.

There is a powerful logic that says no RATIONAL person can be SO wrong, SO obtuse, for such a LONG time.
They must have a COVERT agenda.

The Dem/Prog wolves, proponents of both the very-scary Global Warming / Climate Change scam, and the Covid-19 Lockdown scam, know they are lying.

Note also how many “RE leaders/RE stake holders” quickly linked the two scams, stating ”to solve Covid, we have to solve Climate Change”
All of it is utter nonsense, not even plausible enough to be specious.

Regarding the sheep, especially those who inhabit our universities and governments:

The sheep, worried about tenure, spout their warmist’s views as absolute truths, without ever having spent sufficient effort to investigate them.
The false warmist’s narrative fits their negative worldview.
They never seriously questioned it by examining the contrary evidence.

The policy incompetence regarding CO2 reduction of Vermont governments over past two decades is appalling.

Spending on government energy programs, including Efficiency Vermont, has averaged about $210 million/y from 2000 to 2015, a total of at least $2.5 billion, but Vermont CO2 emissions increased from 9.64 million metric ton in 2000, to 9.99 MMt in 2015, a CO2 increase of 3.6%. WHAT A WASTE OF TAXPAYER / RATEPAYER MONEY

https://dec.vermont.gov/sites/dec/files/aqc/climate-change/document...

Dem/Prog leftists seek to:

1) Destroy the Vermont economy and our CONSTITUTIONAL freedoms,
2) Aim to replace them with CENTRALIZED COMMAND/CONTROL

Handing those Dem/Progs $200 million, AS A DOWNPAYMENT TO GET THE RE BALL ROLLING, will make the Vermont PEOPLE weaker and poorer.

Start a referendum effort to prevent the power cable from coming into Casco Bay. Then, one by one, pick off their preferred connection points and block them that way.

Whatever legislation controls these towers needs to mandate very specific processes for recovery of disposal of damaged, sunk or displaced units and set up a reserve to pay for it.

Word is that the composites will outlast granite (at the bottom of the ocean).

I, too, am thoroughly sick of people prefacing their comments by saying, "I'm not opposed to wind energy, but..."  This is a statement made either out of fear of being publicly attacked or ignorance about the solar and wind industries.  Anyone who knows much at all about the unreliables would realize that no matter how many of these giant turbines or solar panels are installed, in farm fields, on ridge lines, in our oceans, they cannot provide the energy needed and will always require 100% back up from conventional power sources.  Why not be opposed to such foolishness?  Can we really afford to stay on this path? If global warming is going to destroy the planet in a few short years, why are we wasting time and money pursuing this boutique energy source?  Hydro and nuclear are the only clear options right now.

I agree with long islanders comment.. that struck me immediately.. if they are opposed to it offshore they should be opposed to it onshore.. it’s evil
Either place

As I said at of of the AquaVenture presentations, there's no such thing as ONLY ten turbines. They start with ONE so they can say they tested these things first. And they planned for ten as a step in laying the groundwork for dozens or hundreds to come (like sugar plums dancing in Biden's brain).

Can't they find somewhere in our vast oceans a place to put these things where it won't impact fishing? Come to think of it, doesn't Munjoy Hill gather a lot of wind and hot air?

“The fishermen are not opposed to renewable energy,” Virginia Olsen, a fourth-generation Stonington lobster fisherman who sits on the Maine Lobstering Union-Local 207 executive board, told Mainebiz by email.

Why not be opposed to an industry that, by their actions, is opposed to your best interests? Irresponsible to take such a Pollyanna attitude. You owe these hucksters nothing.

"Leaders in the lobster fishing industry are planning a “Protect the Gulf of Maine” rally in Augusta next week to highlight issues related to the development of offshore wind power."

Can the fisherman trust their leaders? People sell out all the time.

Comment by Jim Wiegand on April 22, 2021 at 9:37pm

The fishermen should be very opposed to the rigged research behind this project. Easy to prove.  Also if they get a lawyer........... watch for the sellout with a case designed to lose.

Comment by arthur qwenk on April 22, 2021 at 9:21pm

Fisherman should be actively opposed to  offshore. grid scale wind and "renewables "  which will ruin them.

Fisherman are deluding themselves with not actively being directly  opposed to the waste and destruction of the useless subsidy machines. These are not renewables either, they are UNRELIABLES for elitist's sucking  money out of your hard earned livelihoods.

You are about to be ruined if you do not oppose off shore wind monstrosities and wind scamming subsidy sucking policies. There is no compromise with your freedoms and livelihood now under direct  attack by them.
