Wind Turbines and Birds: Latest from the American Bird Conservancy

How much worse than acknowledged are the bird and bat kills by wind turbines?

EXCERPTS:

By Robert Bradley Jr. -- June 14, 2021

“Which source of mortality kills more or less birds is somewhat irrelevant…. the threat posed by wind turbines grows with each facility constructed in a high-risk area for birds.”

– Joel Merriman, American Bird Conservancy

The “avian mortality problem” has long been an issue for industrial wind turbines, as chronicled over the years at MasterResource. Even fossil fuel critics, such as Paul Gipe (and Christopher Flavin) in Wind Energy Comes of Age (1995), have lamented the by-products of industrial wind. And who can forget the characterization used by the Los Angeles head of the Sierra Club in a 1989 hearing? “Cuisinarts of the Air’.

The problem persists. At the anti-wind site, Stop These Things, one author wrote this week: “Cars, cats and skyscrapers don’t kill Eagles – like the critically endangered Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle, but 60m wind turbine blades with their tips travelling at 350Kph routinely smash them out of existence.”

Bird hobbyists and lobbyists have to be kind to the overall mission of renewable energy to address climate change, but their reservations against wind are real and enduring. The latest example is a March 2021 piece by Joel Merriman, Bird-Smart Wind Energy Campaign Director at the American Bird Conservancy. This excerpt is from Are Wind Turbines a Significant Threat to Birds?....................

...................... With the continued growth in wind turbines, bird and wildlife lovers will find themselves increasingly at odds with their Big Brothers in Washington, DC. Real environmentalism is being sacrificed at the alter of climate exaggeration and alarm.

No amount of US wind capacity can match the weekly increase in global coal plants. And with solar arrays joining windpower in the ‘machine in every pristine,’ grassroot environmentalists are speaking up. Expect a growing civil war in the environmental movement as the Biden Administration tries to rescue wind and solar from the vicissitudes of the market.

MAINE PASSES LD 1659, AN ACT TO CREATE THE MAINE CLEAN ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY ACCELERATOR

June 16, 2021 (Augusta, Maine) - Today, the Maine State Legislature voted to pass LD 1659, An Act to Create the Maine Clean Energy and Sustainability... (final vote for enactment to be held tonight). The bill, sponsored by Representative Stanley Paige Zeigler with bipartisan cosponsors, received support from numerous groups including Sierra Club Maine, Coastal Enterprises, Inc., Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, 350 Maine, the Governor’s Office of Policy, Innovation and the Future, Maine Youth for Climate Justice, Maine Real Estate and Development Association, the Environmental Priorities Coalition, and an array of municipalities, non-profits, and businesses. The bill, which takes an exciting step toward financing an array of climate solutions identified in the state’s climate action plan, will head to Governor Mills for her signature (after tonight’s final vote to enact).

Pseudo intelligentsia has run amok in the state, they are the 'woke' that seem to have taken over the state. One of the biggest offenders are the Audubon society which is in big winds pocket. Wind is an utter failure if the real facts were brought forth, but main stream media and the wind and solar supporters will never open the books on the actual bird and bat kills.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
