Major Internet Outage Shuts Down News, Government Websites

Wave of service disruptions reported just after 6 a.m. E.T.; New York Times, CNN among those affected

Dozens of websites in the U.S. and Europe were inaccessible early Tuesday, with at least one internet outage tracker reporting widespread disruptions.   {WSJ)

Sites that were inaccessible included the U.K. government’s main public-services portal and several major U.S. and European news outlets, such as the New York Times, NYT 1.36% CNN and Le Monde. Down Detector, an internet services tracker, reported a spike in outages just after 6 a.m. Eastern time.

Social media users described widespread outages in multiple regions.

Fastly, the operator of a content-delivery network service that many websites use to help speed the loading of their webpages for users, reported issues with its services on Tuesday morning, though it was unclear whether the broader website outages were related. “We’re currently investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services,” the company said in an online-status page.

At 6:44 a.m. E.T., Fastly’s status page indicated the company had identified a problem with its service, saying a fix was being implemented.

Most of the websites that went down displayed a simple error message in plain text, saying, “Error 503 Service Unavailable,” and including other codes.

Joshua Bixby, Fastly’s chief executive, said the company was investigating the issue, but that it wasn’t attack-related.

“We’re remediating as we speak,” he said. He declined to comment on whether the problems with Fastly’s service were directly related to the websites that were down, but said the company would provide an update.

A little before 7 a.m. E.T., Fastly’s status page updated to say a fix had been applied and told customers to expect global services to return.

Fastly operates what it calls an edge cloud network, which means it stores content from its clients’ websites on a large number of servers that are closer to where potential users are located. Such content-delivery networks trim the amount of time it takes information to reach end-users, speeding up things like website loading and the playing of streaming video.

The setup, though, can make swaths of the internet vulnerable to failures that affect a single delivery network. On its website, Fastly lists dozens of clients. Tuesday’s interruption caused Fastly’s observed traffic volume to drop by about 75%, according to network monitoring company Kentik Inc.

Past web outages have traced back to breaks in other parts of the digital supply chain. A crude 2016 cyberattack against Dyn, a service that acts as a virtual directory for internet addresses, took down hundreds of websites.

Shortly before 7 a.m. many of the websites affected began to come back online for at least some users.

Our near total reliance on the Internet is a spectacular vulnerability.

This would appear to be a test of a trigger to see how feasible it is to bring down large segments of the Internet all at once.

It is time for a second "internet" that eliminates connections to any questionable activity sources. No extra-curricular stuff. Business only. Only accessible by preapproved entities subject to a daily validation, etc. triple security.

Hmmmmm.

High level hackers enjoy showing their power, they even know how to hack elections now. They are perhaps
just playing with us.
If we are so smart, why can’t we un-encrypt encrypted TCP/IP meta data?
These folks can.
The “Enigma Machines” of this century are
active these days. Who controls them ,controls that which is controllable by that modality.
I wish I were exaggerating.

Wouldn't take much to bring the world to a screeching stand still, would it?  No internet?

The Supreme Court ruled, people who are here illegally (about 15 to 20 million), i.e., walked across the recently opened, Biden-in-the-basement border, or overstayed their VISA, are not allowed to APPLY for:

1) PERMANENT RESIDENCE STATUS

2) GREEN CARDS, which is a US work permit.

First, they must be OFFICIALLY ADMITTED by the US government to OFFSET their illegality, then they can APPLY, says the US Supreme Court.

Why does the Court say that?

Oh, that is very simple. It is the law.

Eager-beaver, former salesman CONDOS is jumping the gun.

He is being pushed by DEM/PROG elites to give all illegals the right to vote; the more DEM/PROG vote , the more the veto-proof majority is cemented, the more there will be one-party rule, a la Russia, China, Venezuela and Cuba.

Plus, CONDOS wants to send these illegals, WITHOUT DOCUMENTS, who likely pay minimal or no taxes, and likely suck on government programs, ballots in the mail.

Vermont is trying to outdo rapidly sinking, nutcase-California, with frequent rolling blackouts, because it closed down 15 of 19 Pacific shore, gas-power plants, and where the off-the-rails governor is being recalled, because of malfeasance.

No wonder folks are leaving in droves.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
