How the Rush to Net Zero is Accelerating the UK Industrial Decline

.

It’s basic economics, the price of any commodity or service is determined by the relationship between supply and demand. The less there is of anything, the higher its price will be, depending on the level of demand.

.

.

Electricity consumption map of Europe

Nothing could exemplify the lack of industry in the UK better than this image

Restricting the supply of energy, whether by design or circumstance, or by artificially increasing the price by rules, regulations, taxes, fees and surcharges, is bound to reduce demand.

That debilitates any modern economy.

.

The Telegraph has published an article by Jonathan Leake on how Net Zero has accelerated Britain’s national decline:

For Ed Miliband and Sir Keir Starmer, Net Zero is the route to clean energy, economic growth and turning the UK into a global, green superpower. Keep dreaming!

UK Net zero by 2050 is a suicide pact

Our flora and fauna needs much higher CO2 ppm to THRIVE, as proven in greenhouses

Our current low level of CO2 ppm requires fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and lots of machinery, to raise crop yields/acre to feed people

.

The UK illegally imports Third World, uneducated, unskilled, inexperienced, culturally different people, from all over, each year.
These people are poor and have high birth rates.

The native UK people, with very low birth rates, will not recognize the traditional essence of their country, if this continues, and if not reversed.

This import has greatly diminished UK social cohesion, national purpose, and increased indebtedness, dysfunction, amorality, Hollywood-style diversion and frivolity, sexual deviants in grade schools, on girl's sport teams, etc.

The UK, Germany and France have become dysfunctional countries in the same manner

.

The US was getting there on steroids, due to the leftist, Socialist-Democrat cabal pulling the strings of their demented puppet Biden. for 4 years.

This will finally be stopped and reversed by the Trump team to MAGA and MAHA and MASA

.

Crime is down in the Third World and up in the Developed World.

The extremist, unelected, EU-Brussels bureaucrats want to export the EU model to more and more countries, by color revolution, and by election and NGO interference, and by sanctions, if necessary, such as in Ukraine in 2014, and in Georgia in 2024.

This is not about Democracy, Freedom, Civil Society, etc., but about command/control over Georgia by the EU/US/NATO to use Georgia for geo-political "projects" against Russia, BRICS+, etc., as Ukraine is being used, and as Armenia will be used, to "weaken Russia", and get to the oil and gas of the Caspian Sea.

.

Across the Atlantic, the UK drive for “decarbonization” is increasingly seen as an economic experiment – one that risks tipping the UK from near-zero, real GDP growth economic growth into full-scale decline.

Chris Wright, Donald Trump’s nominee for US energy secretary, has warned that the UK rush to ditch fossil fuels in favor of wind and solar power is causing much higher prices, driving away energy-intensive businesses and contributing to the UK national decline.

“The UK, although no longer part of the EU, has continued aggressive climate policies that have driven up energy prices for its citizens and industry,” he wrote in a recent report. “The once, world-leading UK now has a per capita income less than even the poorest state in the United States.”

.

Leake doesn’t dispute the effects of climate change or “other consequences of greenhouse gas emissions”.

His main point is,  a key part of Net Zero policy is to reduce energy usage, but only in the UK.

How much less?

To quote the Government’s advisory Climate Change Committee: “In our Balanced Net Zero Pathway, the UK economy becomes much more energy efficient, with total energy demand falling by around 33% in end-use sectors between now and 2050.”

Improved efficiency – delivering more output for the same amount of fuel, or less – could help to deliver a reduction in energy consumption.

Yet huge advances would be necessary to yield a reduction in consumption of a third.

Many observers believe the tail will wag the dog when it comes to this target, meaning the UK may be forced to curtail energy use in order to hit it.

.

For Wright and others, slashing energy consumption by a third and still expecting growth is heresy; flies in the face of world experience– an economic experiment no other country has achieved, or even attempted to achieve.

Their view – one supported by most economists – is access to  abundant energy has historically always been directly related to prosperity.

The more energy we have, the richer we will become. And if we have less, we get poorer.

.

Britain’s Industrial Revolution, driven by cheap and abundant coal, is proof, Wright says, of the theory.

But with decrease in energy usage now far advanced, it’s clear the prioritizing of climate targets is having a drastic impact on UK wealth and productive capacity.

In 1970, UK industry consumed the equivalent of 62 million metric ton of oil each year, making most of what the nation needed, including energy intensive products like steel, cement and petrochemicals.

Manufacturing was by far the largest sector of the economy, contributing 30.1% of total output.

Last year, manufacturing accounted for just 9% of the UK economy.

.

A key part of Net Zero policy is to reduce energy usage, but only in the UK.

Other countries don’t matter, because it’s all about the UK Government’s climate policy, which is a political slogan to get and keep command/control over people.

For example, one of the UK proudest boasts is, we slashed emissions from more than 800 million tonnes in 1990 to just under 400 million tonnes in 2023.

These figures refer to the greenhouse gases emitted within Britain’s borders, from power stations, vehicles, homes, offices and industry.

However, it excludes all the emissions generated from things we import, including cars, clothes, steel and cement.

Such “consumption emissions” have grown, from under 200 million tonnes of CO2 in 1990 to 400 million tonnes in 2024

If you add our overseas and domestic emissions together, the overall UK carbon footprint is about 800 million tonnes.

This is only a slight decrease from 1990 (34 years ago), and the UK has paid a pretty high price to achieve it, including continuing high energy prices and increased vulnerability to global price shocks and shortages.

.

“The UK has "achieved" too little production, too much consumption, too little savings and too much debt,” Dieter Helm, Professor of Energy Economics at Oxford University, wrote recently.

The new Labour Government is in the process of doubling down on all four of these, i.e., make things worse!

No wonder the UK people want a new election to throw the bums out.

.

Current (and proposed) economic policy is perpetuating an unsustainable economy.

What is unsustainable will not be sustained.

It will have to end, probably in a series of economic crises played out into the future.

The next generation will pay the price.”

.

Leake goes on to explain that the UK is not the US, and does not have abundant supplies of energy on its doorstep. Britain is dependent on imports.

The key conflict is between replacing old sources of energy with new ones or simply reducing energy consumption.  As a result, the UK is steadily running down its oil-refining and steel-manufacturing capacity.

For Miliband, decreasing energy consumption is a sign of progress, rather than an ominous portent.

A spokesman for the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero said: “Making the UK a clean energy superpower is essential to end the UK dependency on insecure fossil fuel markets.”

But to produce wind and solar and battery systems requires lots of fossil fuels from mining to hazardous waste landfills.

.

The UK is heading into a black hole.

No government can survive enforcing a vision of the future with policies that make people poorer, more immobile, colder, hungrier, have their information controlled, and with less and less free will.

.

Hot-Air-Bag Boris Johnson, said 5.5 years ago:

“We will be able to look back on this period – this extraordinary period – as the beginning of a new golden age for our United Kingdom.”

 - Boris Johnson, statement to the Commons July 25th 2019

He was right about it being an extraordinary period.

He should be wearing a yarmulke to hide his ugly mop, and a mask to hide his ugly face, and deported to a small uninhabited island in the Pacific.

Nobody Wants To Build Wind Farms In The North Sea

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2024/12/07/nobody-wants-to-build-wind-f...

.

The Danish Energy Agency has not received a single bid for any of the three offshore wind farms in the North Sea, the agency said in a statement.

Thursday at 14:00 pm was a deadline, for wind system development companies to give an idea of whether and how they will build Denmark’s largest supply of offshore wind turbines in Danish history.
But no one has signed up.

The end of highly subsidized, grossly dysfunctional, grid disturbing, environment damaging wind and solar is nearer than you think. A few more years of losses and it is finally over

These huge 850 ft tall wind turbines are very difficult to design, manufacture, transport, build, erect, service and maintain, and, at end of life, to dismantle and dispose of in hazardous waste land fills, which means capital and operating costs are very high, which means levelized production cost, c/kWh, are very high.

Bank and insurance companies view these projects as risky, meaning high interest rates on loans and high premiums.

The moneyed elites and their self-serving advisors finally hit the proverbial BRICK WALL.

They will be begging for more government subsidies, as usual.

Those governments are lacking the cash to give it to them, and they fear a major consumer backlash and defeat at the polls..

They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
