Visit to UMPI April 14

We were at UMPI for "University Day" yesterday, Wednesday April 14 and attended a presentation about an under-development vertical-axis windmill designed to be used on tall buildings, as in Boston. all day, UMPI's windmill was turning merrily, and the recent glitch in live turbine data had just been fixed with a flown-in device, so the "live turbine data" site was working again.

Currently, for some reason the rotor is reported at 28.4rpm but there is no power being produced! The big figure… Continue

"Sound" testing protocol for Stetson II received today (April 8)

Hello. - Today (April 8, 2010, I just received from Marcia Spencer-Famous, LURC staff, the protocol for sound testing at Stetson II.I presume it is a public document, The protocol does indeed include dBC.

Wind turbine power consumption information!!!!!

Hello World -I have just taken one of my frequent looks at the University of Maine at Presque Isle's live turbine data website. It shows rotor-level wind speed, rotor and generator rpm, gear temperature, power output in kWH, and other details in including an enigmatic "KWH" which I think means kilowatt hours generated since it was comissioned last spring. That last figure jumps up on most days, and is currenntly about 533715 kWH.

There is no wind right now (mid-afternoon of April 7)…

real informaitonon wind power output

A noise test was done on Stetson I last June (2009) and the results are posted at: Stetsonwind.com/userfiles/regulator_stetson I think this is the correct web address.

Noise tested was dBA, audible noise. There was no testing of dBC, which is low frequency. The report shows not only the dBA noise test results, but also wind speed at 33 meters and at hub height, and it shows variaitons in power output at various wind speeds. This is not theoretical, this is ACTUAL, for June 19 - 22,…

Report on Stetson II

Yesterday we wen to our camp on the hill across the lake from Stetson II. It was a clear and very stil lday - there was very little wind. Only oneturbine was turning. A neithbor who lives nearby reported that he had not ever heard any noise from the turbines.

I heard from LURC - The protocol for noise testing on Stetson II is "in discussion" and nothing has been approved. Iwill get a copy of the protocol when it is approved. I will be looking especially for it to include dbC, as…

Another month gone by, and nothing new on theUMPI Windwebsite

On January 11, on the UMPI website on their windmill, nothing new has been posted since November 2008,

I just checked it again today (Feb 2, 2010) - and still there is nothing new. Just the same old press releases, photos of construction, and promises, promises, promises. What happened to the intention to "share all information" on the windmill with the students, faculty, and the public?

A question for the Admainistration: Why not post some public information on the ACTUAL OUTPUT?… Continue

UMPI'S windmill "website" has old information except current weather

Hello everybody - I have been monitoring UMPI's windmill internet website for weeks., hoping for the information that was so lavishly promised in the publicity that preceeded its construction.

(www.umpi.edu/wind, or Google)

Except for the constantly updated information on current weather, everything I can find on that website is dated November 2008 or earlier.

I think it's past time for UMPI to start sharing with the public lts of… Continue

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
