PPH Shills Again: State should not block ocean wind project
This wind cheer leading piece, which sounds as though it came from a wind developer's PR firm, starts off with the line "There are no oil wells in Maine." That should tell you a lot of what's to follow given that we make virtually zero electricity from oil and electricity is all that wind power makes, however paltry. The wind pushing then goes on to imply that wind is inexpensive electricity: "Most of the energy we use is produced with imported fuel for which we pay top dollar, impacting everything from the cost of living to the loss of our manufacturing base. Why no mention of wind power's mammoth transmission costs such as the $1.4 BILLION CMP "upgrade" (MPRP) which was an outright ratepayer gift to the wind industry which the Press Herald and others instead deceptively attributed to "the need to replace aging lines"? And why no mention of the environmental left's obstruction of building sorely needed transmission pipelines into Maine to bring in typically low cost natural gas? In response to residents' claims that the giant turbines will mar Monhegan's widely prized views, long favored by artists, it uses Europe to throw Mainers under the bus with: Ocean wind is booming all over the world, especially in Europe (which has had more than its share of famous artists through history.)

Optimally,, offshore wind funded by rate and taxpayers could be in reliable source of energy at reasonable cost. But, offshore wind is neither commercially reasonable nor technically viable.

"A press release by Germany’s Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft reports how offshore North and Baltic Sea wind turbines need to be in operation for 25 years before they become profitable, but that they are prone to shortened lifespans due to rust from the harsh sea environment.
As a result the wind turbine installations need extra and very costly maintenance to ensure that they survive long enough. It’s turning out to be an insurmountable challenge..."
