Electric rates fall for most Mainers,
but total bill likely won’t change much
Rates have fallen again for the supply side of a homeowner's electricity bill,
but that's likely offset by rising transmission costs.

The new Emera-area rate, which goes into effect Jan. 1, will be 6.3 cents kilowatt hour. It represents a decrease of 4.6 percent. For a typical eastern Maine home that uses 500 kilowatt hours a month, that translates into $31.63 next year, a savings of $1.52.
This welcome news is offset by the area’s transmission and distribution costs, which are notably higher than the cost of supplying energy. While the typical monthly supply cost next year will be $31.63, charges for transmission and distribution add up to $56.03, for a total bill of $87.66. .....

Compare that 6.3 cents per kwh to the 9.3 cents the PUC awarded to Pisgah Mountain LLC for the electricity generated and sold to EMERA. True that electricity is a drop in the bucket of the total electricity produced and paid for, but it is a hard fact reminder of the unreasonable cost of wind energy. To say nothing of the scam to call the facility a 'locally-owned' company to be eligible for that inflated price. People are waking up to the real costs of wind energy but we still need to keep up the work of getting the truth out to the public. The headline may be lower electric rates, but there's no attempt to prevent that bare assertion being construed to imply that that is due to switching to more renewables. In spite of, not because of costlier wind energy.
