Friends of Maine's Mountains: Industrial wind's new poll is an attempt to silence critics

December 16, 2013   Portland, Maine. Friends of Maine's Mountains (FMM) is encouraging the people of Maine to question the motivation and validity of the recent poll promoting industrial wind power in Maine. The Maine Renewable Energy Association (MREA) is a lobbying organization whose membership includes various renewable resources. But in fact, their primary lobbying focus is wind power.

The poll, released under the name of MREA’s “Wind Power for ME” website, presents a dubious accounting of wind power's favorability. FMM is warning Mainers that the poll’s sole purpose is a public relations gimmick designed to drown out the growing number of concerned voices speaking against industrial wind in Maine.

Chris O'Neil, FMM's Vice President for Public Affairs, was skeptical of the MREA poll: “The results of this poll were predetermined and are misleading. It won't hold up to scrutiny and it proves just how far the industry is willing to go to sell their scheme.”  O'Neil added,“You can rest assured this was essentially a push poll with loaded questions. We want MREA to release the entire study, methodology, questionnaire, and tabulations so we can see what they are really up to. This isn’t a ‘name your favorite movie star’ poll. This can influence critical public policy discussions in favor of wind development, which is ruining Maine's Quality of Place and costing us billions of dollars with no return on investment. MREA owes it to all of us to be transparent.”

FMM, as it stated in its rejection of the recent Maine Audubon report supporting industrial wind, insisted that with the facts in hand, the majority of people will reject the industry's claims that wind power is useful, necessary, and sustainable in Maine. O'Neil said,“Mainers have been told by the industry that wind power can slow climate change and get us off oil. None of these assertions represent the facts and our education efforts are paying off,” O’Neil said. “When they learn the truth about wind power, people suddenly become unwilling to accept the massive environmental and economic costs.”

FMM is committed to educating the people of Maine about the wind industry's questionable economic value, its broad and troubling network of influence, and the threat it presents to our natural resources and economy.

Sherwin

"99% of the people are removed from actual impacts on Maine!

Important point. Maybe this is the reason that Maine wind farms were built before the grid was ready for wind power. Because the massive transmission lines will impact lower ME. Although the power companies are already charging for the "upgrades' for wind....they are not being built. Maybe when there is more discussion on the "upgrades",the house of cards will fall.

99% of the People Are Removed from From ACTUAL IMPACTS on MAine! They Do Not See The Environmental Damage,The Noise Pollution,The Destruction of The Scenic Landscape,The Loss of Wildlife, the Displacement of Wildlife-They Do Not Know that ALL The Power Generated in MAINE Leaves the State! They Are NOT AWARE Of Whats Happening-Whats the Old Saying "Out of Sight-Out of Minde"!!U are Absolutely Right-The POWERS To be in Augusta 99% of Them Have NEVER Visited a Wind Turbine Sight in FUll Operation!!Now That The President of This Country Says "SACRIFICES HAVE TO BE MADE"- SACRIFICE WE WILL-But Those That Are responsible will forever Be NAMELESS!!

MREA did not provide a link to their poll. They released a few snippets of info to Maine Insights - the Democratic mouthpiece that is all pro wind. The sole purpose of the poll was to give the EUT the excuse to dismiss any anti-wind public testimony at tomorrow's hearing..."There's nothing wrong with industrial wind -- 87% of Mainers think it's great." The fix is in as usual in Augusta.

Thank you Chris O'Neil for your diligence and determination in defending this Great State of Maine against the deceitful wind industry and fighting for the people who cherish their health, property values, our state's resources and their own personal enjoyment of the outdoors

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
