Group backing CMP power line wins support of former environmental leaders

Ten former state environmental officials and advocates lend their support to Mainers for Clean Energy Jobs, a coalition of business and union groups that backs the $1 billion transmission line.

A coalition of business and union groups backing Central Maine Power’s $1 billion transmission line proposal has won the support of nearly a dozen former state environmental officials and advocates.

Mainers for Clean Energy Jobs – which comprises individuals, businesses, labor unions and trade associations backing the proposal to link hydroelectric power generated in Canada with customers in Massachusetts – announced on Monday a statement of support from a group that includes former commissioners of the Maine Department of Conservation, two former executive directors of the Natural Resources Council of Maine and a former president of the Maine Audubon Society.

But some environmental groups oppose the project, arguing that it will harm the Maine woods with no tangible benefit to Mainers, while other environmentalists don’t echo the enthusiasm voiced by those whose support for the project was announced Monday.....................

Maine will double its heat pump rebate for homeowners

Rebates from the Efficiency Maine trust will increase from $500 to $1,000 for the first heat pump installed in a home if it meets the criteria for high performance and efficiency.

..............The rebates from the Efficiency Maine trust will increase from $500 to $1,000 for the first heat pump installed in a home if it meets the highest-performing “Tier 2” criteria for performance and efficiency. The rebate for a second heat pump unit will also be doubled, going from $250 per home to $500....................................

Heat pumps meeting the so-called “Tier 1” rebate standards will continue to be eligible for a $500 rebate for the first indoor unit and $250 for a second indoor or outdoor unit, as in prior years. Additionally, enhanced $2,000 rebates are also now available to homeowners who receive heating assistance through the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

“Seven years into our programs promoting this new generation of heat pumps, specially designed for cold winters, we continue to see growth in consumer demand which tells us these new models really work well, even when it’s freezing outside,” Efficiency Maine Executive Director Michael Stoddard said.

Do you know what happens when it gets real cold and the heat pump runs like an everyday resistance heater ? People let them run as the electric meter spins like crazy. Do you what these people say when they get their next power bill. CMP is screwing me !!!!

"Natural gas utilities in Massachusetts are facing an existential crisis: they could be out of business by mid-century. That's because the state's 2008 Global Warming Solutions Act requires emissions from burning fossil fuels — like natural gas — be cut by 80% economy-wide by 2050." WBUR

Well, Massachusetts inflicts a new, expensive carbon tax on In-State natural gas generators and natural gas-fired generation declines due to higher prices, so, ISO-NE, who is in charge of keeping the lights on in New England, determines  a certain Mass. gas-fired plant must run to keep the lights on and pays them a premium price to run and, friends, that means all New England ratepayers pay for the Mass. carbon tax program.
Now, this certain gas-fired plant is scheduled to retire in a couple years, helped on the way to closing by the stupid carbon tax and, now, ISO-NE is requesting bids for a new transmission line to absorb the loss of this plant's generation, calling it a reliability issue which means all New England ratepayers get to share the costs of this transmission line.
The "cord" that attaches us to Massachusetts isn't a corridor,it's a government gone wild.

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
