Avangrid-EDPR Wind Project Trying to Slither Out of its Tax Obligations

Maple Ridge, the largest wind "farm" in the eastern U.S. is a joint venture between John Baldacci's Avangrid and EDP Renewables, the latter partially owned by the People's Republic of China. China is trying to buy the entire company. http://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/will-we-allow-communist...

Maple Ridge owners seeking assessment reductions on wind farm

LOWVILLE – The owners of Maple Ridge Wind Farm are seeking to have the assessments on the project’s Lewis County properties reduced by hundreds of millions of dollars.

Flat Rock Windpower LLC and Flat Rock Windpower II LLC have filed tax certiorari actions in state Supreme Court challenging the assessments on its nearly 200 wind turbines and associated transmission lines spread across the towns of Martinsburg, Harrisburg, Lowville and Watson.

According to court filings, the companies’ properties currently have an assessed value of about $565 million. The companies are claiming the total assessed values should be $18.3 million, a nearly 97 percent reduction.

The companies base their proposed reduction in values on a claim that the assessments are illegal, the court complaint states. They contend that the assessments “include personal property or moveable machinery and equipment” that is not considered “real property” for purposes of real property taxation under state Real Property Tax Law.

Poor assessment: Wind companies don’t believe turbines count as real property

Avangrid Renewables and EDP Renewables jointly own Maple Ridge. Avangrid is a subsidiary of Iberdrola S.A., “an energy pioneer with the largest renewable asset base of any company in the world, with more than 14,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy spread across a dozen countries,” according to the Avangrid website.

EDP Renewables presents itself as the fourth-largest producer of wind power in the world, in 13 national markets in Europe, South America and North America.

Thus, neither company operates on a shoestring, and both have sufficient assets to bring to bear against tiny Lewis County and its even tinier municipalities.

As long as Maine schools propagandize windmills as the savior of the earth, and the university system continues their sucking at the teat of big wind. Maine will continue to turn out Lemmings that believe the propaganda of the big blow! And taxpayers will continue to be swindled and our mountains will continue to be destroyed! A downward spiral that so needs to be halted, by teaching real science in schools and stricter over seeing of the university system and what they consider scientific instruction, and not pie in the sky fake science!!

Gary, I wonder if Baldacci & Galan will be among the execs who “walk away with millions in their pockets”.

Avangrid is Iberdrola.

the tie also shows very poor taste.

I don't know anything about Baldacci's oral health but that's an old photo. File photos taken when he was Gov show him in the same suit & tie while in the company Iberdrola Group Chairman Ignacio Galan. That ugly tie had to have been a gift from Iberdrola.

You would think a guy with millions would fix his damn tooth. This alone shows any outsider that something is very much amiss with this guy. A crown only costs about a thousand dollars, an implant about $2000. This cheap sucker has probably never even cleaned the suit he purchased at Goodwill.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
