While recreational camp data may not be a perfect surrogate for tourism data they are indication of what we already know - Maine is highly favored by tourists and tourism is a particularly important business for Maine.

There is no doubt that the Maine brand is the great outdoors. And it is a potentially even more valuable brand in years to come as more and more of the huddled masses in Megalopolis and other places discover the incredible place that is Maine. Unless we destroy it.
Why would we want to jeopardize the tourism and tourism potential we have here in Maine? Do our representatives in Augusta really want to infest our incredible mountains, ridges, hilltops, lakes, forests, farmlands, seacoast and islands with giant out of place industrial wind installations and requisite transmission gashes? All so that a small handful of super wealthy insiders in distant places can become yet wealthier at the expense of Mainers and our visitors who so faithfully depend on Maine being Maine?

I spent summers of my youth on Drew's (Meduxnekeag) Lake - which is located in New Limerick and Linneus, ME - where my parents owned a camp. A few years ago, the neighboring town of Oakfield allowed First Wind to build a wind facility on a ridgeline that runs down to the lake's western shore. Since then, the facility has been purchased by Terra Nova Renewable Partners.
What previously had been a beautiful body of water with camps dotting some of its shoreline has been blighted with towers decorated with red, flashing lights that loom over its western skyline. The town of Oakfield sold out its neighbors for what amounts to 30 pieces of silver and a new fire truck. Shame on 'em.
My parents long ago sold their camp, so I don't have a financial stake in the lake anymore. But, I do have an emotional one, and I have a great deal of compassion for those who own camps there, some of who were there back when I was a boy.
For whatever power is produced by the 48 turbines in the Oakfield string, some of the original peace and quiet and sense of place has been stolen from Drew's Lake and its residents. As long as those turbines tower over the lake, it will not be the same. Too bad to desecrate a place like Drew's Lake simply to line the pockets of the greedy who hold no respect and appreciation for someone else's little piece of heaven. "Carpetbaggers" is too kind a word with which to label them.
It all amounts to a poor trade off, in my opinion. And shame on Oakfield for selling out their neighbors' peace and quiet.
