WAGM - UMPI's wind turbine damaged in late-night fire

It will be interesting to learn precisely how the fire was brought under control as stated in the article given the nacelle is pretty high off the ground. Given UMPI's track record of obscuring the facts about this turbine, one might be wise to be skeptical of this claim. It looks as though there were no trees near the turbine. What if there were and what if we were in a drought and what if there were strong winds blowing? Clyde MacDonald has been warning Maine about the potential for wind turbine caused forest fires for years:

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - Officials at the University of Maine at Presque Isle have been busy today assessing damage done to their wind turbine.

According to UMPI President Ray Rice, the generator of the wind turbine caught fire around 10:45 last night.

Rice said that produced an electrical surge which caused a good portion of the University to lose power.

The fire was brought under control and Rice said it lasted a relatively short amount of time............

That is a Versa "47..." upgraded turbine hat replaced the original RRB Energy Ltd.PS-600 wind turbine. The upgrade was very quietly installed within the last year.  The new one TOASTED!

These gearbox driven wind turbines hold around 200 gallons of transmission fluid similar to that in a Volkwagon transmission called mineral oil --This fluid when heated is inflammable.

Gearbox wind turbines heat up and leak as they wear out. The lifespan of a gearbox is 5 to 10 years.

We can expect many more gearbox failures and fires in the future-- When these turbines do catch on fire the wind industry is stupified how the fire started ---

These turbines are a fire hazard and there is NO fire department in the world that can put out transmission fluid and fiberglass on fire 300 feet in the air

It's time to stop the insanity now !

UMPI Quietly Revises Its Wind Turbine Goal

http://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/umpi-quietly-revises-it...

Funny how they quietly dropped their annual KWH estimate from 1,000,000 to 700,000 with absolutely no fanfare, but were otherwise never shy about boasting of the turbine far and wide. They even did a roadshow to boast, accepted some sort of award for it and saw a movie get made about it. But when the 1,000,000 went to 700,000 KWH, not a peep. All the while, their projected $100,000 in annual electricity savings never changed. How does that math work again?

Read about the disaster that is the UMPI wind turbine and the university cover up of the failure at the link below. It's high time the University of Maine keeps its promise and share full details of this experiment with the public. To know that the wind power it so fervently publicized failed and then decide not to report on the failurde is malpractice on the part of supposed educators. So educate us. Show us the money. Show us the electricity. Show us your math. Show us who decided to keep the public in the dark all these years. Show us who will be held accountable. The Maine PUC commissioner Kurt Adams, who jumped to First Wind, gave UMPI $50,000 for this. The PUC thus has a full right to conduct an investigation.

Otherwise, we learn nothing and repeat our mistakes.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
