BDN - Gov's Problem with Wind Turbines Called "FAKE" by VP of Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters
Sherman, ME - a gateway community as promised or just Maine's next industrial wind dead zone?
While it may very well make sense now to fully support tourism at the 500 day old Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument, it's sad to see a lover of Maine's environment criticizing Governor LePage's protection of Maine tourism from industrial wind turbine blight as a "faux-concern about the impact of windmills on Maine’s tourism". There is no question that these monstrosities do not belong in areas where people visit to "get away from it all". Moreover, there is no question that these monstrously sized and noisy towers harm local tourism-reliant economies. The wind industry likes to cite national tourism numbers, but that is simply so they can bury devastated LOCAL tourism economies in a larger number.

Perhaps Ms. Mueller doesn't know about all the wind turbines planned for areas very close to Katahdin and the new monument such as Mt. Chase, Sherman, Stacyville and Patten, as well as slightly more distant areas such as Benedicta and Silver Ridge. When folks like David Farmer and Lucas St. Clair "sold" the monument to the people in the more proximate towns, they spoke of these towns becoming "gateway communities" and talked of great potential for tourism. Based on the present access roads into the monument, these would in fact be the host communities. However, if the area is invaded with near 600' tall wind turbines, then tourism potential will be lost. Perhaps then we'll see Millinocket businesses lobbying for direct access to the monument from Millinocket.
Hopefully David Farmer and Lucas St. Clair will examine both sides of the ledger and work hard to protect the gateway communities they promised from becoming industrial wind dead zones.

I agree, that any donation of land should have an established fund for tax offset in perpetuity. If you look at a map of Maine's Protected lands you have to wonder who pays the property taxes.
If you look at Roxanne's business dealings, you may find she "Screwed" ole Burt and probably others along the way. Burt's Bees operated in Guilford for several years with some local worker bees. A strange operation, an unsafe workplace.

I know "...help offset losses in property taxes due to non-taxable Federal lands within their boundaries..." but she still SKATES on taxes and SCREWS MAINE. She should at least have to cough up the difference.

"Payments in Lieu of Taxes" (PILT) are Federal payments to local governments that help offset losses in property taxes due to non-taxable Federal lands within their boundaries. The original law is Public Law 94-565, dated October 20, 1976. This law was rewritten and amended by Public Law 97-258 on September 13, 1982 and codified at Chapter 69, Title 31 of the United States Code. The law recognizes the inability of local governments to collect property taxes on Federally-owned land can create a financial impact.

Bottom line, it's all about "Mama's Boy St. Claire for Congress, the failure to establish a carbon tax and to make sure Mama doesn't have to pay TAXES on the land she removed from the Maine Property TAX ROLL by giving it to the Federal government.

As discovered last summer, Al Gore would seem to have his tentacles into the board of Katahdin Woods & Waters so watch some of their board cheer lead for wind farms in those gateway towns so as to increase the value of the land right outside the monument or coming up Rte 11. Or even land around Medway. Then like magic, watch for their friends to just happen to own that land. It's like politicians making killings in the 1950's because they knew where the Interstates were going in. The environmental groups are now part of these shenanigans.
