Groups Say Billions Needed To Jumpstart Stalled Wind Energy Development In Maine

NOTE: This article now appears in the BDN.

Good to see former EUT Co-Chair Stacey Fitts working for the wind industry he helped while in the EUT. He was also a member of both of Governor Baldacci's wind task forces. And of course heinous expedited wind law creator Baldacci was made vice chair of Avangrid, the nation's second largest wind company in December 2015. Nothing here to see people.....just move along.

Co-Chair Fitts was quoted in the February 7, 2011 Sun-Journal as saying "Everyone wants to find the conflict, the snake in the grass. But every legislator in the building is conflicted if you were to take that same standard and apply it to everyone else. It’s the nature of being part-time legislators."

“It’s mostly fiberglass. They have a spar that runs through the middle as the main beam support, but they just float on the wind,” says Stacey Fitts, who manages the Bingham Wind Plantation and other assets held by Novatus, a J.P. Morgan affiliate that’s one of many investors to pick up the pieces after the nation’s biggest renewable energy company, Sun Edison, went bankrupt last year.

Stacey Fitts' Boasting Employer When He Was on the EUT

Stacey Fitts' Boasting Employer When He Was on the EUT

Why is it that Rep Stacey Fitts can be one of the biggest wind cheerleaders in the state, making decisions on wind and shaping legislation - all of which will benefit his employer, Kleinschmidt Associates. Look what they ran on their website up until recently. No shame whatsoever.

  • Once we get by the dime store novel phrases "turn a slow waltz" and "across misty ridgelines" we find out we don't have demand. We are told by our "cub" reporter that the transmission lines don't have the capacity to carry this expensive form of energy. I wonder if the subsidy levels have also dropped? Could it be the 100 million dollar grants are also drying up? Makes you wonder! Now they want to build offshore! how is that power going to be transmitted to southern New England? With all this talk about renewable energy the people running the power grid still view wind and solar as unreliable! As of 3:55 pm today renewables are providing 10% of the power ISO New England is using. That information is from their web site snapshot.

    • But those descriptions make the windmills sound so quaint and unobtrusive! Windmills were never a viable solution. The developers know this, that's why they don't have any interest in continuing without the subsidies. They're a "feel good" patch so we can pat ourselves on the back, meanwhile research toward actually coming up with a good option goes unfunded.

  • The Bangor Daily News's skewed and biased outlook at these events notwithstanding, Governor LePage is once again to be commended for standing tall and demonstrating to lawmakers the existing folly of the wind boondoggle proposed in 2013.

Being fiscally irresponsible and environmentally unsound, this plan stood to adversely affect those from all parts of the State of Maine if implemented.

Kudos again to Mr. LePage for standing tall on behalf of us all, and support for those in the legislature who could currently build upon this legacy by continuing to stand tall in the face of biased media arguments and big money operatives looking to make a profit upon all those who call this State home.

  • I hear there is a great place for a wind farm in the north woods. Now that the bee's are gone it will be safe.

  • Does this mean the environmentally friendly wind farms will no longer flatten mountain tops and clear cut miles of forest. Darn there goes the environment.

  • Even with nearly absolute control over the non-regulated electric supply market, government falters. Will wind developers sue for breech of promise on goals set in law ?

  • Surprise.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
