BDN: Baxter Park director frets about new monument next door including scenic impacts

"Night lighting and buildings that interfere with Baxter’s viewshed also should be avoided, Bissell wrote".

If a small visitor center in the national monument impacts the Baxter State Park viewshed, what about the 500' + tall wind turbines planned for just a few miles east of the monument? They would be far more visible than a small building and would impair views in both Baxter State Park and the national monument.

Thank you, Robert.  Fence straddling is a common tactic for those caught between a rock and a hard place, but sometimes you just have to fight for what you believe in, and the fighting can get dirty.  If he believes in keeping the wild nature of Baxter State Park, Mr. Bissel must acknowledge the threat of hundreds of five hundred foot tall blinking towers forming a linear north south wall to the east of the park, running along Route 11.  Don't fence Katahdin in.

Mr. Bissell does not make the decisions for the Authority.  Look who is on the Authority for that.

Penny, Long Islander and all,
I just got off a 15 minute phone call with Jensen Bissel. Admittedly, I lectured him about the science and facts of industrial wind and expressed my disappointment that he did not mention the threat these massive turbines present to Baxter and the new monument in his interview with the Bangor Daily News. He mentioned powering some of the park facilities with wind energy! I told him that the paltry energy from these destructive turbines is transmitted out of state and any claims about powering all these local homes is completely bullshit. I mentioned people that he knows well who oppose these destructive, bogus monstrosities. He expressed some mild frustration in my lecturing him but did not respond clearly when I asked why he did not mention industrial wind as a huge threat to both parks and where he personally stands. Jensen sounded like a politician, who must remain relatively mute and not offend others. He claimed that he already knows the facts I presented to him and may even agree with our position but he did not speak clearly about why he didn't raise any concerns he has with industrial wind. It was a frustrating, inconclusive conversation and again I felt he was being kind of a politician, unable to really speak up. He suggested contacting the Baxter park authority board. There must be something in the air here in Maine, that turns good people into deaf and dumb mutes.

It's entirely possible Director Bissel hasn't a clue about all these planned wind projects in the Baxter State Park region.  We should all contact his office.

Director Bissel, who is a great director of Baxter State Park, is quite irresponsible here in not even mentioning the huge threat to both parks, from the proposed industrial wind scam turbines just miles away from these protected lands. Very disappointing and not acceptable. I'm a member of Friends of Baxter State Park and am calling his office right now.

Perhaps because the State now owns the land, they will reconsider the placement of these monstrosities ?

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
