Liar, Liar University of Maine Wind Turbine on Fire
Aiding and abetting the Maine wind industry are a number of entities which we should be able to trust but cannot. Examples include the University of Maine System, the so called environmental groups and the media. The news, or lack thereof today, April 2, 2019, illustrates the pro-wind bias from two of these groups, our universities and the media:
1. The following piece in today's University of Southern Maine's (USM) Free Press quotes two USM professors advocating for 100% renewable energy. One quote in particular caught my eye:
“When I see wind turbines I see soldiers that don’t have to go to the Middle East to fight for oil."

What struck me about this is that wind turbines produce electricity (albeit unreliably) and in Maine, we use virtually no oil to generate electricity. (Except on rare occasions when Yarmouth's oil fired peaking plant on Cousin's Island is brought on line to meet atypically high demand - a situation caused by "environmental" groups blocking desperately needed natural gas pipelines connecting the northeast with the Marcellus, one of the earth's largest recoverable deposits of natural gas). Dr. Sanford teaches or has taught various environmental courses at USM including "Introduction to Nature Tourism". I wonder if he pitches his tent at a wind farm when he's looking to immerse himself in nature.
2. Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the University of Maine's wind turbine fire, a fire that completely destroyed the turbine. Despite the total destruction of the university's sole onshore wind turbine no major newspaper has ever published a single sentence about this fire. Bear in mind that when the wind turbine was being built and when it went up, the press was always there to cover those stories and cheer lead. We'll read about high schoolers building model wind turbines in wind industry created competitions, but not a single word on the fire or almost anything that exposes the grossly failed promises of wind power. If a tree falls in the forest and the media doesn't cover it, guess what, the tree still fell.
Media Amnesia
Forgetting the one year anniversary of the UMPI fire should not surprise us. Last year was the tenth anniversary of Maine's horrendous expedited wind law which paved a clear path for the wind industry to trample Maine and Mainers. There was no retrospective from the media. They've never really looked back to examine the effects of this law which was written by and for the wind industry. They never even bothered to disclose the fact that the previous owner of most of the major newspapers in Maine, S. Donald Sussman, is the person who gave hedge fund D.E. Shaw its start. (Also at the time, married to Congresswoman Chellie Pingree). D.E. Shaw was of course longtime owner of the largest wind developer in Maine, First Wind.
This coming May (5/15/19) will mark the tenth anniversary of the much ballyhooed UMPI wind turbine. Don't hold your breath to see a commemorative status report in any of the state's newspapers. There's never been a status report in ten years.
Perhaps one of the Maine media's most glaring omissions was just three months ago when there was not a peep from them on this story: "All six land based Maine wind projects that had submitted proposals in response to Connecticut's "zero carbon" electricity RFP were rejected yesterday". http://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/all-six-maine-onshore-w...The big winner in Connecticut's decision was nuclear, but you'll never hear about that. The same folks warning us of planetary destruction in 12 years have declared nuclear power off limits despite its overall safety record and improving technology. The Maine media basically dismiss it.
Funny how some things just aren't news if it doesn't fit your agenda. The real question is "what is driving the media's agenda these days?" They no longer report the news in a fair and balanced fashion. Because of this, they imperil not just Maine's ridges and hilltops, but far, far more.
If you're not having to fight off a wind turbine project near your home and you rely on the mainstream media for your news, chances are you have little idea as to how fraudulent and useless wind power is. And if you're a student, chances are your teachers and/or college professors have been leading you down the renewable energy garden path for a good part of your life.

There are small fortunes to be made in grant monies. Money corrupts science. On another sinister note, UMO has designated "Free Speech" zones on their campus with appropriate signage. The rest of the campus apparently bans free speech and students quietly accept this violation of their civil rights. Critical Thinking 101 needs to be a mandatory requisite for all high school graduates.

And when you see those big wind turbines spontaneously catch fire, be sure to help your local firefighters put out the wildfires that may spread to your home. They have accounted for many deaths and injuries.

Thank you Willem for pointing out the U.S. doesn't need mid east oil like other countries. As the mother of a soldier who spent a year in Kuwait, I don't recall either him, his father or I thinking he was on the Iraqui border to protect the country's interest in oil. He was there to help gight terrorists, not to bolster up oil interests.

The professor is some sort of environmentally trained person, with near zero experience regarding analysis of energy systems.
Thé US generates electricity about one percent from oil.
Zero oil comes from the Middle East to the US
Middle East oil goes mainly to Europe, Japan, and China.
unsteady, intermittent wind and solar could never stand on their own.
They are cripples and need gas turbine plants to perform the peaking, filling in and balancing whenever wind and solar are minimal, which often happens in New England THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
The professor knows that, but he naively pollutes minds of young students.
He should be told by the Provost to stay by within his field, instead of offering extraneous nonsense.

I tried to post this comment to the Free Press article..........When I see wind turbines, I think of the thousands of eagles being killed each year, the minuscule amount of net energy being produced for society and I feel disgust towards the multitude of people willing to lie for a paycheck.
