Dudley Gray: Put your wind turbines in the Berkshires

Even though our LUPC (Land Use Planning Commission) recently rejected Nextera’s petition to expand the expedited permitting areas of Chain of Ponds, Seven Ponds, Alder Brook, Skinner, T5R6 and BKP WKR townships, I find it hard to believe CMP (Avangrid) and Nextera, the parasitic beneficiaries of the bust-up of Maine public utilities, will give up their attempts to continue their ruination of Maine’s scenic character.

As evidenced on Feb. 1, Democrats in the Legislature voted in lockstep, preventing the Governor’s bill from receiving a public hearing. Unfortunately, six Republicans fell down on their jobs and were absent for the vote, thus dooming the outcome. Primarily, LD 1810 would have protected Maine’s irreplaceable ridge lines, mountains and other unique features from destruction by increasing the sight distance of any wind turbine from 8 to 40 miles.

I will try to make clear my understanding of the wind power expansion into Maine, New Hampshire, Western Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Ontario and other provinces of Canada, Middle and Western US, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, parts of Africa, and elsewhere; I'll try to make this clear to you all. The quest for "renewable energy" has set nation against nation, state against state, split entire communities, and pitted fathers against sons and daughters. Never since the American Civil War has such divisiveness and privation been seen in this world. All of the misery of the two World Wars, and the wars to follow, with the loss of civilian life and property, is dwarfed by the the present excuse to "save the planet" for "the greater good". Those that oppose one aspect of this may be unaware of other global reasons for it's perpetuation. A recent Wall Street Journal news article showed a photograph of a massive tanker docked at Everett, MA, carrying LNG gas from a Russian Arctic terminal that is supplied from Russian petroleum reserves via pipeline. Should we in the US prohibit pipelines? Should we call for the destruction of coal fired power plants, and forbid new ones, with better emissions treatment systems from being built? Should we strive for the impossible goal of 100% renewable energy to run a modern society? Should we just run away from understanding the complexity that exists in knowing what impacts on creating the local weather and the resultant climate, and embrace the demonization of CO2, because it seems to be easy and convenient.

I have had to disinherit my only son because he refused to see these things. He runs a malaria research lab near Washington, D.C. Is that because the Government, which funds his career, disapproves of my understanding? I don't know. This is "tough love". I do not ask anyone else to wear my shoes.

I do know that long after all human beings are gone from the Earth, there will still remain more than enough fuel in the ground to be found. I hope that human beings will refrain from decimating each other or create a New Dark Age, because they want to "save the planet".

As a Massachusetts resident, I cannot support any project that harms the land, air, water, well-being of the citizens of another state ... especially if it is done, under whatever pretext, to benefit people in my state.  That said, I am co-founder of a fledgling organization, Citizens for A Wise Energy Policy.  We have developed a long list of all the reasons why Industrial Wind Turbines are not either benign or sustainable. We must find other ways to address diminishing resources, pollution and caring for the environment.  If it would be helpful to those in Maine, including the Governor, I would be happy to email that list (each reason has a quote and link to the original source).  The harm done to the environment alone, to the sense of place and to tourism would be enormous should any more industrial wind turbines be erected.

On a recent flight south I looked out the window and saw wind turbines in the Berkshires. I later looked on a map for these particular turbines and believe they were ones in or near Florida, Mass. What a shame as I had been to a friends house in Florida, Mass many years ago several times and remembered how beautiful it was. They were up on a mountain, or at least hill. I remember on the way up there was a hairpin turn where huge icicles formed and the local kids would make them multicolored with food dye. The whole area was amazing. I remember walking outside at night and being awed by the night sky. I can't imagine how it has changed with those wind turbines.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
