Wind Wise Radio -- Victorious Pennsylvania. Mistreating a Veteran. Vile Politics from AWEA. Sunday 6/17, 7pm ET.

Three large wind projects in Pennsylvania have been stopped.

WWR will speak with Laura Jackson, the President of Save Our Allegheny Ridges (SOAR), and Jack Buchan, an active opponent of these projects, about these important victories including how a small, endangered bat helped save a mountain from being destroyed by a huge Spanish wind corporation.

  • Gamesa
    • Shaffer Mountain Wind Factory -- 30 turbines on the border of Somerset and Bedford counties.  We will learn about how the federally endangered Indiana Bat helped to win the day.
  • Ibredrola
    • Clover Run Wind Factory - More than 40 turbines in Clearfield County near Grampian and Luthersburg.
    • Dunning and Evitt Mountain Wind Factory - 24 turbines in Bedford County

We will hear more about Bernie Hagen's story.

Bernie is a Vietnam-era Veteran living with in a 122-turbine project in Minnesota.  Bernie sustained injuries while serving in Okinawa that resulted in a susceptibility to tinnitus.  Prior to the turbines being built, his VA doctor wrote that his health would be in danger if the turbines were built and suggested the wind power company buy his home.  The doctor's advice was ignored, three of the turbines are less than 1/2 mile from Bernie's home and both Bernie and his wife, Cheryl, suffer adverse health impacts.  Bernie's doctors now advise he leave his home at least 2-days a week or anytime the symptoms become too severe.

AWEA is all about the money -- your money.

In November of 2011 the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) met at the prestigious La Costa resort in Carlsbad, California to discuss how to spend millions on fighting off any threats to the continued proliferation of wind turbines.  The document describing the meeting is a eye-opening primer that describes in excruciating detail how a large, well-funded industry goes about ensuring that it will continue to receive giant grants and tax subsidies.  If you have a strong stomach, you can can download and read the document here.  By the end, you will have a very good idea of the mechanisms by which large corporate interests corrupt our political system, garner our tax-payer money, and saddle us with bad policy.  The photo below is a very small piece of what you will find in the document...

We will highlight the wind industry's number one goal -- extension of the federal Production Tax Credit (PTC).  The PTC, due to expire at the end of this year, is the lifeblood of this otherwise economically impractical industry.  Without the PTC (along with renewable energy portfolio standards, 1603 grants, etc.) the industry would shrivel up and die a natural death.  AWEA knows this and is spending millions now to preserve the billions in tax dollars it expects to gain.  AWEA employs a large number of tactics to get its way including hosting fundraisers for legislators, sponsoring fly-ins to D.C., operating a war room to immediately respond to threats, going over the head of civil servants to political appointees if things are not going their way, sophisticated co-opting of "environmental" organizations like Audubon and the Sierra Club, etc. etc. etc.

The Sierra Club's new "Wind Works" effort is a prime example of how successfully the AWEA has penetrated what used to be a staunch protector of the environment and is now a shill for large corporate interests.  The language on the Wind Workspage was obviously lifted directly from AWEA's campaign.  Has the Sierra Club forgotten about the AWEA's efforts to slow down or stop species from being listed as endangered?  Its support to get take permits for bald eagles, golden eagles, and penninsular bighorn sheep?   It's wide spread destruction of private and public natural areas including pristine mountain ridges, forests, prairies and deserts?

If there is anyone who is still sending money to the Sierra Club, you should simply tear up the check, write one directly to AWEA and cut out the middle man.  Or better yet, if you actually want to send your money to a legitimate environmental protection organization, send a check to the Center for Biological Diversity.  They are not confused about whose side they are on.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
