Utility regulators set to award contract to Dirigo Solar

Utility regulators set to award contract to
                             Dirigo Solar

The southern Maine firm would build utility-scale arrays across Maine to provide wholesale power.

..... In 2006 the Legislature had the PUC direct Central Maine Power Co. and Emera Maine to enter into contracts with energy generators to provide energy to the state. Since 2008, the PUC has issued four long-term contracts, mainly to wind projects.

The contract involving large-scale solar farms comes at a time when other utility-scale solar projects are being proposed across the state. Utility-scale solar refers to large, multiple-acre solar farms that generate a lot of electricity compared to the small rooftop installations that are becoming more and more popular for homeowners and businesses. ......

Most that I am aware of are NOT tracking.......... though Tracking does produce nearly 3 times the output so I have been reading.

are any of the big solar arrays in northeast "tracking"? Some places such as Cape Cod have an advantage that they are cooled by ocean, but also tend to be forested. Our larger arrays are fixed, and not even at an ideal angle.

I am not anti solar, nor anti residential wind. I am against the destruction of land in a futile attempt to do a job that can best be done as a point of use production. A job that is shifting expenses as costs to those that do not benefit, for the sake of those that will not cut back. For those that have no respect for others and how it may effect their lives, for that little extra power. For those that pay taxes, yet have no electricity or make their own as needed and pay once again through taxes for those wasteful people or businesses.  Until the last possible bit of reduction is Made by all .......... I see no need to create more ability in the name of a Do Right Feel Good, justification. We have the ability to make BEST USE of what we do currently, and make a gradual shift. Like saving pennies, gradually, eventually it becomes the needed retirement fund.

Tracking Solar, alleviates our low angle issue, as it tracks from morning to night, winter to summer either  optically or programmed the position for most direct rays from the sun even the non visible useful portions that produce minimal power.

I find it really curious how large scale industrial solar can possibly be sold here in Maine where we have such a shallow angle of sunshine in 6 months out of the year, and have such reduced hours of solar output.  Keep the solar at lower latitudes where the weather and angle of incidence are more conducive to collecting electricity.

I am not anti solar in the least, as I have a solar array on my camp where we have no electricity, but it is primarily used during summer months where snow and short periods of day don't affect us.  This plan is just another way for the elite to collect huge amounts of money and provide us with exorbitantly high priced energy that could be produced by gas or nuke plants that would be far less money per kwh, last a lot longer, and be less of an impact on the environment.  My God, even clean coal can be made just as effective at not producing CO2 (which is not the problem anyway).

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
