Eight Republican Reps: "Running water is not a renewable"

The following eight Republicans went against their party's leader, Governor LePage and agreed with the wind industry that running water is not renewable. By effectively banning large inexpensive Canadian hydro power as a renewable, they have granted yet one more subsidy in kind to the parasitic wind industry that is harming Maine and Mainers.

P.S. - It should be noted that 100% of Democrat votes also agreed that running water is not a renewable. (Emphasis added on 4/19/12 after Representative Dunphy's comment).

Birds are attracted to wind-turbines and swarm around them to be chopped when the turbines turn. Natural gas prices are currently low and may stay that way for a long timebecause water perpetually runs downhill (is renewable). Wind has no predictability and it's expensive. After the capital costs are paid, there are many maintenance, emergency and decommissioning costs in fuel and in costly destruction.

There may be a short-lived economic benefit for a few at the beginning. The money paid to construction workers will, in the short run, show up in local stores and municipal tax collections (albeit temporarily). That could be used to support local services too, maybe.

Industrial turbines won't pollute the air with as much CO2 as will most other energy generators. However, they will chop millions of birds and barametrically kill millions of bats. Water is another matter. The access roads built are very heavy duty and be built through marshy areas and over streams. Herbicides and insecticides are needed around the turbine grounds, and because water eternally (renewable) runs down hill, those poisons get taken down stream, poisoning all in its wake, and eventually into our rivers where they poison fish and whatever lives there.

Wind is not the answer to Maine's energy problems, but it is playing a huge role in worsening those problems. Part of the answer would be to remove wind-power from the state's energy portfolio and stop errecting them. Maine should continue to seek a balanced energy policy that includes conservation and a variety of sources -- excluding wind.

Larry Dumphy     I voted for Gov. Paul LePage because he has the balls to say and do what he thinks with out pussy footing around. Now Larry you know I am not the Gov. or in the Gov. it is a good thing I am not, because  those eight Republicans would have got a hell of a lot more then a small ranting from me. Now as an old retied logger of 81 years old I am sorry if you don"t like way I spit my words out.                          Freemont Tibbetts   Dixfield Maine .

and Larry I so appreciate you trying to educate as fast as you could.  admittedly I did not know how the process worked.  Now I see that I need to send something to every representative and senator.  I am sorry I missed the boat this session.    I will compile and they shall receive.

Behind the door??   The definition of insanity is doing the same things, the same way again and again ... and expecting different results. The policies that have been put in place since deregulation were done by whom?? The same people had been elected until last year ... Who elected them???  My question is WHO is responsible for the state of our state, and the state of our nation ..  The VOTER has the ultimate power ..  Politicians can only do damage if elected . If you think for a second that I have been standing "behind the door" you are wrong .... If you think the GOVERNMENT is at fault for the wind issues .. I would suggest that YOU ARE THE GOVERNMENT .. Politicians are elected to represent YOU .. If they do NOT represent you VOTE THEM OUT

Interesting comments concerning Eff. Maine.... Again, after my minor "rant" concerning those "eight Republicans" ... Why do the actions of any of the agencies surprise you?? Look at the MTA, Maine Housing, Green Eff. Maine... Who do you think managed the carbon credit program for Me.Housing, .... Which one of the board members is the Energy Czar for the Bucksport biomass project???? Which member is a MAJOR fundraiser for the Democratic Party.. -- you may also find it interesting to follow the MONEY that flows to his sisters coffers ... You make comments about Strang- Burgess ... And I don't dispute any of it ----- but lets take a good look at the founders of this crazy web of intrigue. Just saying ..... Who really IS responsible for the mess we're in ...... MAYBE IT'S YOU ???

I find your comments directed at eight Republicans a bit puzzling ..... I happen to be a Republican, and I voted ( and lobbied a great deal).... to get this bill passed. If I remember correctly, not ONE Democrat supported this.
I find this interesting, as I am very confident that a significant number of you have supported the Democratic candidates in the past. This "big money, big wind" is not new. This has been going on for YEARS, yet no one was screaming foul. Why is it that you in your headline have pointed out that EIGHT REPUBLICANS REPS..... and said nothing about the WHOLE DEMOCRATIC HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AND SENATE?? I will grant you, this is partisan.... As I stated, I am a Republican, and I have and will continue to work with FFM, FHM, and the Citizen's Task Force... but how about a little respect for the Republicans who did support this bill, and those who supported the bills last year. This should not be a "party" vote. A number of us Republicans" have worked diligently over the past two years to turn this around..... and I personally find it a bit disturbing that after 15 years of screwing around with Maines Energy Policy..... by a DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY, you are blaming eight Republicans for not getting it straightened out in ONE TERM... I would be very interested to hear from those of you who have posted. Maybe I have missed something here.... HELP ME OUT!!!!

I just received the following email from my Representative, Meredith Strang-Burgess:

HI John,

As you know we are now out our recess and I am working back through all my many emails the best I can. I am sorry you are disappointed with what was my initial vote on LD 1863. I do not sit on Energy committee and I was working with several committee members to understand this bill. Like so many of these issues, there was bad information and bad behavior surrounding both sides. So much so, that I would say it was one of the reasons that the Committee of Conference was unsuccessful. Interestingly I was talking with Ken Fletcher about some of the proposed changes and most likely would have supported the bill had it come back to us for another vote.

I just sent a note expressing my unhappiness to my Rep. on the above list.  Why is it that running water can be declared not renewable in this situation, yet no one seemed to have a problem letting Poland Spring come into our backyards and siphon out millions of gallons a year?  Love the double standard.

House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
