TAKE A CLOSER LOOK - WAS THE BINGHAM SETTLEMENT REALLY FOR MAINERS - OR KURT ADAMS SWAN SONG?

The agreement struck between FMM and Sun Edison appears at first glance to benefit Maine Environmental groups - But take closer look at some of the recipients - The Trust for Public Land - Check out the Maine Advisory Board under about us and Advisory Boards - Neil Kiely, former First Wind employee now with Androscoggin Bank, Angus King III, Sun Edison employee, and David Wilby, Sun Edison Director of External Affairs and Angus King crony.

And then there is the The Forest Society of Maine - Again - lots of good environmental folks - But look who is the Deputy Director - Karen Tilberg - Special Assistant to Governor John Baldacci and Chief henchwoman for Baldacci and principal architect of the expedited wind law . Karen is now frantically running around Greenville telling people she didn't write the law  But some of you who have copies of emails know better don't you!

And what better way for Kurt Adams to say thank you to all of his friends who helped make wind development successful in Maine - That is short of just giving them cash too!

So you be the judge - Whose settlement was this?  And whose victory?

why settle an appeal at late date?   go to supreme...stall..stall..stall?     not too many more that we cannot stop....then PUC will have to approve of more transmission.......we are handtied and every one almost knows it.

I guess that how you "play the game" these days.

Personally - I hate to talk about the effect on our bird population - I sent an email earlier this year to wind friends in my lake cottage area - Where are the birds? I used to lay in bed with my dog and listen to the songbirds - They are gone!! Recently  we have all learned that Bull Hill has the highest bird kill of any other wind farm in New England!! SAD!

The settlement was priceless PR for the wind industry; look what great neighbors they are!

There could have been condors or whooping cranes living around this project and the developers have would have still finagled a way to get  this project built. Species and mortality numbers do not matter and never have, expect when writing up their fraudulent disclosures. Then they make sure reports are written to hide the slaughter coming to these species.

Here is an example of this corruption at work.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         The PDV wind farm (now called Manzana Wind Project) in California was approved with a fraudulent Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and virtually no opposition from conservation groups or agencies entrusted to look out for the condor.

In the Draft EIR I found the following statement wrtten for the turbine developers.......... “the habitat assessment of the project site revealed a lack of suitable habitat for the California condor. Therefore the project would not lead to significant impacts on the California condor.” The PDV Wind project sits right next to federally designated Condor Critical Habitat, in other words breeding grounds. The PDV habitat is foraging territory with a resident population of game animals living in the upper elevations of the PDV wind project.  This habitat is just a short glide down the slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains. The fact is mule deer live on this land and are a source of food for the Condor. Mule deer, which are a food source for condors were not even mentioned in the EIR as living in the habitat. The Tejon Ranch even owns some of the land in the approved PDV Wind Project and they sell big game trophy hunts (deer, elk, pigs and turkeys) every year to hunters looking for an easy kill.

In the Final EIR for the PDV WIND Project I found these statements in reference to Turkey Vultures and condors in association with the dangers of wind turbines, “Scientific literature also suggests that diurnal vultures, such as the California condor, are not at substantial risk for collisions with wind turbines”.   In addition, data on comparable species, such as turkey vultures, indicate that they skillfully avoid turbines. As turbines are in an area with high visibility, condors could be expected to be able to avoid collisions with wind turbines at the project site.

Where were all the USFWS handcuffs?????????   These statements are not only false but are fraudulent as well.  The scientific community is very aware that each year thousands of vultures of every type are slaughtered by wind turbines. The numbers of dead vultures worldwide indicates that these slow flying gliders are not at all able to “skillfully” avoid the 200 mph tip speed of the prop wind turbine.

By now most have seen the video "fatal accident with vulture on a windmill"  and are aware that vultures are no match for a wind turbine.

There are 3 bald Eagle Nests on the Piscataquis river across it from my house. Given there were 8 adult nesting pair a few years back in my area alone, there should be 4 nests close by. On my trip to Bingham today I did notice one immature eagle riding the currents near Route 16 south of the project. These Nests are probably not accounted for, but are within 16.5 miles of the easterly turbines.

Two more Nests also have Osprey occupying them now that I think about it. But go back and forth between the species from year to year.

Comment by Jim Wiegand on October 16, 2015 at 3:21pm

There are nine Bald Eagle nests located within 18 miles of the project, with the many food sources and desirable air currents that will attract eagles to turbine locations; turbine related bald eagle fatalities will be inevitable.  I expect that with the migrating winter population of bald eagles and including turbine related nests failures, there will be at least 200 bald eagle fatalities from these turbines.

On paper anything can look like a victory. Especially when the wind  industry's rigged mortality monitoring will keep most of the dead eagle information away from the public.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
