Rockport Wind Forum: Ragged Mountain plan; UMaine Prof says no more land windfarms: its time to go 20-50 miles offshore.

The May 20, 2010 wind energy forum at the Rockport Opera House was extraordinary for several reasons. Listen to podcasts of the meeting; below the picture.

1.Camden Windfarm Plan. On June 15th George Baker and assorted hangers-on will present a plan to Camden Select Board for a Ragged Mountain windfarm. The wind snatchers have set their eyes on the Camden Hills. (cont'd below picture)Already a meteorological tower has been set up. But don't worry, forum participants were assured by enviro consultant Richard Podolsky. No permits have been applied for yet, so just relax and wait until all the pre-application work w/agencies, biostitutes, bankers etc is done wait until the June 15th public information meeting when you can learn more, we were told.

* University of Maine's Habib Dagher, PhD, who leads the DeepCwind Consortium - the moving force behind the state's leadership role in American offshore windpower research & development - said repeatedly that the conflicts over the effects of upland and nearshore windmills on health and conservation are serious and insoluble. Instead, Dagher said deepwater floating windfarms 20 to 50 miles offshore will be more powerful and reliable and will keep the electricity utilities from harassing their own consumers with flicker, noise and infrasound.

If Podolsky is doing the env'l impact assessment you can bet that the project will get passed - he's never, to my knowledge, told a wind company what they didn't want to hear. He clearly missed a half million of birds migrating 200-300 feet over his head when he did the Vinalhaven bird migration monitoring for that project! I guess if you keep your head down you won't see what you don't want to see.........I agree with Dr. Dagher - put these things offshore - not coastal shallow water - but deep water. It may cost more money initially, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Fewer ecological risks all around. I'd like to see most terrestrial wind projects dumped - they can create more ecological detriments than they are supposed to ameliorate. No coastal (terrestrial or shallow water) wind projects! too risky!

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!" Listened to Part III. Will try to listen to more tomorrow, but I always feel I need a shower after listening to these guys.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
