Maine may face brownouts, higher electric prices

This article talks about the possibility of rolling blackouts and huge price hikes on our electricity bills. It talks about conventional electricity plant closures and inadequate natural gas pipeline.

"As the nation shifts ever more of its power production to natural gas, areas such as Maine that can’t tap directly into the shale deposits where extraction is taking place across the country are dependent on an inadequate supply infrastructure."

What it doesn't talk about is that the green ideologues and hucksters pushing wind power are the same persons that have forced plant closures and blockaded natural gas pipeline that could easily come into Maine.

In a number of cases, this Sun Journal piece talks up renewables/wind:

most everyone agrees that in one way or another, a growing reliance on cleaner, greener electricity is part of the long-term solution to both supply and an improved climate outlook.

While in some ways, that future is bright — a growing number of green sources of power don’t contribute as much to climate change

wind power and natural gas-fired plants are likely to replace the lost capacity over time

Environmentalists, though, are pushing more solar and wind capacity in Maine, which is already a leader in the East in generating electricity from wind.

Both Harwood and Leahy said that green sources are going to be an ever more important source of electricity supply.

As it is, wind power already provides the equivalent of two Vermont Yankee plants to the region’s electricity, delivering more than 1,300 megawatts daily. It’s expected to rise to 8,600 megawatts as more projects come to fruition, mostly in northern Maine and offshore in southern New England.

But unless there’s more than planned, renewable sources may still not be enough by 2024 if the regional planners are accurate.

Yes Deborah Andrew, and we should invite ISIS for brunch.

OH Deborah, Were it only true that this were a world where we didn't need a military or reliable affordable energy. Woe is us, but we do need them. Not quite like we need food, water and air; but close enough that we had better find some better solutions to finding peace and prosperity.

It would be wonderful if 'natural' gas were a wise source of energy.  Unfortunately, the methane released into the atmosphere and the enormous amounts of fresh water that is laced with chemicals, required for each well, contaminating the soils around and aquifers below, to say nothing of the leaks all indicate that there is no rational reason to use or expand drilling for 'natural' gas.  We must find ways to legislate conservation on a far broader and impactful scale than is currently in place.  It is more than likely that one major change would be to close all overseas military bases, reduce the military and redirect that energy and expense toward retrofitting all existing buildings.  There is no doubt much more to be done if/when the public is willing, and the politicians will follow.

An absolute farce. Each and everyone of us pays an unsustainable price for the government chosen renewables that have negative consequences for the natural environment, the working environment and the living environment.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
