For many in Moosehead Lake region, wind is ‘a four-letter word’

For many in Moosehead Lake region,
wind is ‘a four-letter word’

Anti-wind signs, such as this one in Rockwood, are common sights around Moosehead Lake. SunEdison had planned to meet with local residents in September to brief them about its plans. That meeting was canceled and isn’t likely to be rescheduled until next summer, when seasonal residents return.

Seasonal Residents do not have a VOTE on this issue as they are NOT residents with a voting ability, unless they falsely claim to be year round residents.

This should be:
closely reviewed by the communities surrounding the entire Lake Region.
Only full time residents that can register to vote have the right to participate in the decision making on this issue. Seasonal Residents can not affect any decisions, though they are taxpaying.
This is an Issue I struggle with myself on property and taxes along with other community concerns.
Hopefully SunEdison is not scheming to have more people become registered voters long enough to get this issue passed.

I left the following comment on the article but PPH has not posted it:

When Angus King was pushing his wind project in Roxbury, I spoke at one of the informational meetings. I said what if Maine decides to be the only state in New England that does not allow wind turbines? Its future as a destination for wilderness lovers would be insured. Here's what Roxbury Pond, a jewel in the western mountains, got instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

All our legislature needs to do is say with a united voice......... NO........ to wind. But they will not.

Until this is settled in the Federal Courts of this nation, that NO will stand.

Maine currently has a very hard NO stance on Metallic Mineral Mining...... This should be Maintained, however the legislature has the POWER and the AUTHORITY to close this fraudulent scheme down NOW.....  as an emergency bill should it choose to act.

It also has the authority to insure that RE-permitting does not happen.

Those that will not act, are not there to represent the people, but their handlers.

U are Absolutely Right Eric - U have made some very Valid Points ! In 2008 and ever since with increasing resistance Maine's Status  is  "OPEN FOR EXPLOITATION" ! Exploitation of ALL Our Natural Resources - Whether it be WIND ,Air, or Water- The Commercialism of MAINE and with the Current Administration - is FULL STEAM AHEAD and DAMN the ENVIRONMENT and the RESIDENTS in the U.O. terr. go to  H___ !! Its Almost like the Opening of the WEST to Settlement in the mid 1800's - Only instead of Staking out Land for Homesteads to live on -its the staking out of MAINES Exploitable Natural Resources  and TAke Advantage of the Citizens  and their community's ! UNFORTUNATELY the CITIZENS (Who have very little Voice in Augusta) do not have the resources /Backing to Fight on their behalf against these GIANT Corporations  that are RAPING Our State  And The Legislature is fighting a loosing battle against the SPECIAL INTERESTS..

Maine, nor the region is in need of power when we only use 43% of what we currently produce without wind.

The Moosehead Region with its fortress of hills & mountains surrounding it, are shaped much like an ancient volcanic caldera now collapsed to form a lake, with one outlet known as the Kennebec valley.

Promoting the region for tourism has historically brought many to enjoy the region, however the constant attack on the land has detracted from its beauty causing any of the regions existing financial problems. Overbuilding also has caused a problems.

Allowing the normal business sector to grow to meet the demands is the proper way to achieve a stable sustainable community. Investing in muli million dollar schemes, such as shopping malls or hotels and hunting lodges, then hoping that these will be fully and profitably utilized is just that...... a Scheme doomed to fail.

This is much of rural Maine........ Building the Barn, for no cattle resulting in costs without profits.

Whereas we should have the cattle first, before investing into a massive barn expanding the barn to the need derived from the profits.

This too with wind is backward thinking. Destruction of one needed resource or future, for something that is not needed in Maine.

I Do not Blame the RESIDENTS of the Moosehead Lake Region one Bit !

There very LIVELIHOOD DEPENDS On the BEAUTY and scenic values the Region Provides !

Yes they need Power but that Issue can be addressed in other more appropriate ways !

If I lived up there I would Be CAMPAIGNING 24/7 to keep ALL WIND POWER development out of the region ! Moosehead is the 2nd most beautiful  place on the North American Continent- I KNOW I Have been to EVERY National Park and wilderness  area on this CONTINENT! Already in many areas of the State of Maine the TOURISM/Recreation  revenue has fallen very DRAMATICALLY do to Wind Power Development ! MANY businesses have closed up and left the State of Maine !!

WHAT A CON- Game /Act that the Legislature has pulled on the People of Maine !

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
