Why is Germany so dependent on Russian natural gas? (Same reason as Massachusetts?)

Germany would not be so dependent on Russian natural gas if the German government didn't shove wind and solar down the throats of ratepayers. Not unlike Massachusetts.

Massachusetts’ anti-fossil-fuel policies are the primary reason why the state has relied on natural gas imports from a Russian oil company the Department of State sanctioned during the Obama-era.

Officials in Massachusetts and neighboring New Hampshire blocked financing in 2016 for the $3 billion Access Northeast Pipeline, which would have helped the state weather an energy crunch this winter. The state’s decision to rely principally on green energy hiked gas prices and forced it turn to Russian oil imports.

Environmentalist groups like 350.org and Greenpeace are organizing online campaigns to oppose every new coal, oil, and natural-gas project in the country. Greenpeace, for one, has etched out the position that the only good fossil fuels are the ones that are left in the ground. The Sierra Club, meanwhile, claims the U.S. is ready for 100 percent green energy.

From 2009:

Economic Impacts from the Promotion of Renewable Energy Technologies - The German Experience

Government policy has failed to harness the market incentives

needed to ensure a viable and cost-effective introduction of renewable energies into

Germany’s energy portfolio. To the contrary, Germany’s principal mechanism of

supporting renewable technologies through feed-in tariffs imposes high costs without

any of the alleged positive impacts on emissions reductions, employment, energy

security, or technological innovation. Policymakers should thus scrutinize Germany’s

experience, including in the US, where there are currently nearly 400 federal

and state programs in place that provide financial incentives for renewable

energy.

Although Germany’s promotion of renewable energies is commonly portrayed in

the media as setting a “shining example in providing a harvest for the world” (The

Guardian 2007), we would instead regard the country’s experience as a cautionary

tale of massively expensive environmental and energy policy that is devoid of economic

and environmental benefits.

LNG Deliveries to Boston: The Christophe de Margerie, a RUSSIAN-OWNED icebreaking tanker named after the deceased former CEO of Total, motored into Isle de Grain, UK, on Dec. 28, according to market information provider ICIS. It unloaded LNG from the new Yamal gas/oil plant in Russia*.

The Gaselys, a FRENCH-OWNED tanker, arrived at Isle de Grain, UK.

It took on a cargo of commingled LNG, including LNG from the Christophe de Margerie.*

It left the port on Jan. 7

It arrived at the ENGIE terminal (owned by a FRENCH company) in Everett, Mass., three weeks later and delivered its payload.

* A large LNG storage facility in the UK that receives gas from many sources, including the Netherlands, Norway, Middle East, Russia, etc.

* Shipments of Russian oil and gas are not subject to sanctions, but “US persons and those in the US” are prohibited from financing Novatek, the lead company in the construction of Yamal LNG. TOTAL, a French company, owns 20% of Yamal.

* Whereas, there is no way of knowing the Russian percentage, the US media quickly labeled it Russian LNG.

* Both LNG tankers were built in South Korea. It is amazing how much of the LNG infrastructure, and LNG storage plants, and LNG fleets are built and owned by foreigners! See URL.

I've been calling Germany on their massive buildout of "renewable" energy for a number of years now. I read in an article several years ago that they built enough renewable to provide roughly 40% of their energy needs at enormous cost. The problem is that when they put over 18% renewable into their grid it becomes VERY UNSTABLE! It has also increased the cost of power to the consumer to the point where they have to choose to pay their mortgage or pay their power bill. For the poor and elderly it means eating or leaving the lights on.

Germany's solution is to reduce what they put into their grid and sell off the overproduction of energy to neighboring countries at very reduced rates.I always thought the Germans were sharp business people But this plan makes no sense. Now we see their whole energy scam . . . . buy cheap Russian gas to fuel their scam.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
