Dark money and blurred alliances drum up resistance to CMP power line project (PPH)

An unusual mix of opponents, one of them quite secretive, is working at a grass-roots level to block a proposed 145-mile power line through Maine, even though it's not on any ballot.

........................ The fight over the transmission line differs from a political campaign because residents can’t vote on it. Nothing will be decided on any ballot. Decisions on whether to approve or deny the project rest with utility and environmental regulators in Maine and Massachusetts, as well as federal agencies.

But opponents can amplify their voices in an effort to influence those decisions, if they can get more people to show up at public hearings and file comments with the agencies.

Stop the Corridor is asking people to sign a petition opposing the project. On Sept. 11, it had gained 284 signatures toward a goal of 1,000.

The website was registered with GoDaddy.com in early August by Domains By Proxy LLC, an Arizona corporation set up to obscure website ownership. Its home page states: “Your identity is nobody’s business but ours.”

Even allies don’t know who’s behind it.

Mass wants Maine to host an extension cord for Mass but Mass refuses to allow new desperately needed pipelines be built which would bring clean affordable natural gas to Maine. Do I have that right? Why would Mine not make the natural gas a condition of the deal? Does Maine not understand the concept of leverage?

If this is an 'honest' attempt, then why hide the ringleaders? Right,,, it's not honest it's people with deep pockets that are heavily invested in wind power! You know the same people that support blowing the tops of the mountains off scar the mountains face with huge access roads, then another scar for their transmission lines!! Yeah those people! corrupt money hungry, don't give a damn about Maine except how much money they can extort out of it!!

I am not sure who these "Stop the Corridor" people are.

This is not the same group as those in the STEWC group formed in 2012.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
