Credible Leadership, Please Step Forward, NOW!

Regarding the completion of transmission lines paid for by Maine taxpayers to accommodate out of State users.

We are in desperate need of leadership. We talk to each other but that is not enough. We have anti Wind organizations in Maine, but none offer leadership necessary to run a campaign to expose abuse of Maine electric rate payers. With leadership from a Maine 501c3 organization, we would easily get hundreds of signers of a petition! The 501c3 gets recognition and exposure they need to build membership!

STEWC media contact list, for those writing or contacting Maine's Media. This was last updated in 2014 and I will update it with new information as it comes in. Submissions of additional media contacts or current updated info welcome.

I would be proud to sign the Ten Person Complaint. This is much quicker than 60,000 signatures. Only prob. , we have Eastern Maine Electric where I live. Their rates have been much lower than CMP and Bangor Hydro. They restore power quickly. In the spring their rates are due to increase exponentially however. I wonder if they too are being asked to chip in for our upgraded transmission lines? If so, would it be legal since the above mentioned providers were to provide 90% of the cost of the transmission lines. Deregulation was supposed to bring down rates through competition. Instead , we have secrets , obfuscation and a black out from mainstream media . Regulate utilities and drop out of Iso New England. It is like dealing with the mafia.

Donald, why don't YOU lead? I admit that I don't quite get your insistence that "a Maine 501c3 organization" is what's needed, but I think Friends of Maine's Mountains is one, if that matters so much. And I think it's great that you're fired up. Did you attend FMM's annual wind summit last fall in Freeport? They convened anti-wind folks from all over Maine, and invited a national expert from Maryland. Were you there? Also, they have invited guest columnists to publish on their blog. I think any and all positive contributions are helpful. Why don't you take a crack at it? Here's their invitation to contribute, in case you haven't seen this yet: https://friendsofmainesmountains.squarespace.com/config#/pages/532f...|/fmm/2014/11/22/kvetch-complain-or-achieve-accomplish. Also, have you written any letters to the editor, or an Op-Ed? than can help, too. Whatever you decide to do --- thank you!

A reminder Donald, STEWC is not an Organization per se. We are a Coalition of different organizations  and non-organized citizens with different issues which are all potentials for some sort of involvement in the proposed East-West Transportation / Utility Corridor. We thought about gaining a 501c3 or 501c4 status, however "[ I ]" feel that there may have been a conflict in that other groups within the coalition were or may have already held that status. I am not sure why we did not pursue that.

The Bingham Wind project is within one of the zones of a LOGICAL route from an engineering standpoint. With the announcement of the Fletcher Mtn. Farm, that too is within the same zone I had mapped out 2 years ago. With Dover-Foxcroft, Charleston, Garland publicly targeted, this was the route of logical route given the Bingham project had been announced and lay en route.

Though We do not always agree on all issues or methods, we came together (and United) on the common issue. We kept Politics or political differences out, with the realization that what mattered most was "our right" to a self-determined sustainable future. Not one imposed upon us for corporate profit and control.

Con't

or challenge the silence of Audubon and NRCM.

Realistically, large organizations can easily ignore us and our own 501c3's can find justification to stay in their comfortable bubble and work on what they want and feel good. It seems to me we are at a crisis point and right now we are faced with exposing the corruption around Wind that would take a coalition pooling resources, especially manpower. We need around 60,000 signatures on our pitition, we need letters to the PUC, and we need to be in front of the general public. Without this effort we cannot succeed against the Federal, State, and big business Giants.

Thank you for the response Alice.
The reason I suggested a 501c3's is they are recognized organizations in the State that have Credibility and makes it more difficult to ignor by public media and/or the State.
How many 501c3's do we have in Maine? Organizations like STEWC and FEN who if they picked up our cause, because they care about Maine's quality of Place, could make a profound statement that the media and the PUC would have more difficulty to ignore. In fact, all such organizations together could join forces and embarrass

From the website of the Maine PUC:

Ten Person Complaint

Ten or more persons can request the Commission open a case by filing a petition with the Commission. The complaint must be about a utility’s rates, acts or practices which the petitioners believe are unreasonable, insufficient or discriminatory, or about the fact that utility service is inadequate or cannot be obtained.

The complaint must clearly state full names and addresses of those who’ve signed the complaint and identify a “lead complainant”—a primary contact person designated the agent for the other complainants. The petition must clearly state the act or thing done (or omitted to be done) about which the complaint is made and include reference wherever possible to the law, order or rule (and sections thereof) related to the claimed violation. The petition will be reviewed and judged as to whether the complaint has merit; if so, the Commission will open an investigation.

Long Term Purchase Agreements, create a financial obligation. If we reduce consumption of energy, as we did in the past when CMP and Bangor Hydro (now Emera) encouraged us to do so with the free CFL (Not so Green) lamps (with mercury & other toxins), they still need to meet the financial obligations to their lenders, and meet their production needs to show the DEP and the State that the "Need for the Project" exists.

This is one set of allowances, requirements and methods that need to be eliminated in the decision-making process of any agency of this state and our legislature. Market-driven pricing, with investor risk, should be the only factors. Investors know whether a project is viable or will produce a profit and reap the rewards of their risk if a profit is made. They also know when the time has come when it is not going to be as profitable if at all. This is but one reason that Government should not be influencing how business growth progresses. Forcing Taxpayers or Ratepayers to become risk-taking investors, is not the Function of Government. This type of support for projects takes investment ability from every individual willing to take the risk for a profitable return. A Return these corporations do not have to pay back to the taxpayer or ratepayer as an ongoing subsidy, incentive or other publicly funded method.

another meet always gets me going again.  There is a citizen's initiative in the works, thanks to Dan remain.  How do we get a hold of people living with-in 2 miles of these new projects? I know a lot about the appeal process.

They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
