Attack on Tom Stacy: Anti-wind effort smeared by crony environmentalist

It is strange to read a perfectly normal, accurate biography of someone only to realize that the other side is using facts to try to smear someone for doing a sensible thing.

And for Tom Stacy, that “thing” is pushing back at the grassroots level against monstrous industrial wind turbines that are environmentally invasive, anti-consumer, and anti-taxpayer.

Yet mainstream environmentalists, favoring high prices and less reliability for the master resource of energy, not to mention environmental energy sprawl, pretend that there is an inherent social good in renewable energies that are inferior in every which way.

Dave Anderson, policy and communications manager for the high-sounding Energy and Policy Institute, has written a hit piece, “Tom Stacy: A top anti-wind activist who got paid by a fossil fuel funded group.” The laborious 3,200-word article basically says that advocating fossil fuels and receiving money from a pro-fossil fuel organization is prima facie disqualifying.

Never mind what Mr. Stacy says about wind power and solar power in terms of free consumer choice and taxpayer neutrality. Never mind such questions of affordability, reliability, and rural environmentalism. Never mind that Tom Stacy might really believe what he is advocating and sees himself as a David versus Washington-DC-based Big Cronyism.................

Sherwin, that has a complicated answer, but rest assured these thieves are laughing all the way to the bank.  Using Rollins Wind in Lincoln Lakes, it has nameplate capacity of 60 MW.  That comes to 525,600 MWH per year.  Multiply by 28% capacity factor=147,168 net output.  Assuming it sells on the ISO market for an ave. 5½ cents per kwh, that generates a gross of $8 million per year.  If Rollins participated in the PTC, that would bring in $3.5 million per year more.  Additional money is made selling the RECs for the same output.
Rollins does not gain from PTC because they received an ARRA Sec. 1603 grant of $53 million in 2011.  Also keep in mind that these thieves receive Investment Tax Credits up front as well as 5 year double declining accelerated depreciation.  While they have high maintenance and operations expenses and pay the grid for all the electricity they use, they have all received local corporate welfare in the form of TIF agreements that have usually lowered potential property taxes by 50% or more over the life of a TIF, heavily front loaded in favor of the wind project.
Life expectancy from the manufacturers are usually around 20 years.  Going through Maine winters, I would guess less than that.  Gearboxes can start to fail within 5 years and that repair/replacement is expensive.

I WONDER IF THERE ARE ANY STATISTICS  on LONG THESE HUGH  MOUNTAIN MONSTERS  have to run at full output capacity  to pay for themselves- then how much  REAL POROFIT  there is  the actual POWER  output they produce ? IF the cost $5,000,000  get up and running- When they start producing a PRofit  and exactly how much profit do they ACTUALLY Produce? What is their ACTUAL LIFE EXPECTANTCY ???

"Thinking persons want to know about tradeoffs: economic and environmental. And what about the fact that Tom Stacy has been and mostly is a volunteer for his cause, unlike Dave Anderson who gets a nice full-time, six-figure salary?"

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
