Art Brigades's Blog – January 2010 Archive (5)

So you've just read about us in the Sunday paper?

Welcome. You're likely wondering: "How in the world could anybody be against wind power??"

Before you conclude that we are a bunch of whiners who don't want sleep-depriving 40-story towers in our back yards (that's generally true), please poke around this site. Lest you think we are a clique of conspiracy theorists (some of us do smell a pretty big rat but rats don't stick around forever the way abandoned wind turbines will) please read the sensible information found here. Legislature: "Not here, not now."

Was anybody listening??? The Utilities Committee was presented a golden opportunity on January 28. There was a bill before them that dealt with wind power permitting. It was a simple bill that made LURC and DEP proceedings more alike.

Some smart legislators, led by Representative Tom Saviello, attended the public hearing and submitted an amendment to the bill. The amendment proposed two urgent things for Maine citizens:

1. All wind projects need to get a public hearing.… Continue

Must Reading!!!

Folks, if you haven't seen it in all the activity on our site, you simply must read Brian's description of how Oakfield is being bamboozled by First Wind. Every Maine town, even if they are Pro-Wind, needs to have at least a moratorium in place asap. Then they can get to work drafting an ordinance. Jackson, Dixmont, and others are blazing the trail. Anyone in any town that has a hill and a gentle breeze needs to send Brian's remarks to their selectmen:…

Dagher Spoke at Chamber Event in Portland

Dagher, a compelling public speaker, acknowledged the need for backup and or spinning reserve. He said it should be done regionally, probably with Hydro Quebec. He talked about the electrification of our heating and driving systems creating the new demand.

He opined that in his wildest dreams he might someday get production cost down to 8 cents. During Q & A he was reminded many times about the RI project in the paper this week that signed for 25 cents. He acknowledges that it is… Continue

Town of Jackson to Discuss Ordinance Restricting Big Wind Jan. 21

The town of Jackson has recently extended its 6-month old wind moratorium, and their Planning Board will next look at their draft ordinance on January 21. To their credit, they have learned from their next door neighbors in Dixmont, and Jackson's draft ordinance is leaning towards more sensible restrictions than the hollow State Planning Office "Model Ordinance" that John Kerry wants them to adopt. But the ordinance still needs lots of work and the town is torn: Some townspeople are hearing the… Continue

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
