Saddleback Mtn, Carthage Video

Hi, all. We shot some video of this beautiful area one day this winter. I hope you'll get a chance to take a look so you can see what some of us over here are fighting for. The video is about 15 minutes long and is not narrated. You will likely recognize some of the spectacular scenery of the Weld/Mt. Blue area. Enjoy.…

Weld Rejects Six Month Moratorium on Wind Power

For some reason, this article does not allow comments. In any event, I think this was a mistake on the part of Weld's voters, but when there is not a wind proposal on the table, it's my sense that moratoriums are harder to get.

WELD — Voters rejected establishing a six-month moratorium on wind development facilities on Saturday. However, they decided informally to set up a…

Weld's Annual Town Meeting Saturday

(Blurb from today's dailybulldog.com)

WELD - A proposed 180-day wind turbine moratorium and changes to the shoreland zoning ordinance may stir up some health debate among voters attending this year’s annual town meeting set for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6 at the community center.

Incumbent Nancy Stowell and Kelly Hutchinson are running for a seat on the Board of Selectmen, the town’s assessor and overseer of the poor. Carol Cochran wants to continue as town clerk and tax… Continue

Just when I needed a laugh...

...I was in the store and saw the Tuesday "Franklin Journal" (out of Farmington) was out. The headline? "Farmers Fighting Wind Power." I thought, "Oh, wow, great, more support." I then read the article and it was about farmers opposing the changes to the military fly-overs due to the potential impact they will have on their livestock. Just a copyediting blunder, but I had to laugh and wonder if perhaps more and more editors have wind on their minds.

By the way, the article was…

No place to run; no place to hide?

Is Saddleback in Carthage the equivalent in raw beauty to such areas as the Grand Canyon or Glacier National Park? Of course not. I lived in Washington state and have traveled all around the country. I've camped in the national parks and climbed mountains that tower over Saddleback and I love those places. But when my friends from Seattle came to my wedding here, my father explained to them that while "their"…

Photos & video of and from Saddleback Wind, Carthage

Just a brief update. While others have hiked there, as well, Saddleback Wind does not have a trail and so many have not seen the top of the mountain or the view from there. Family members bushwhacked their way up today and took video and photos of the panoramic views. This will help in educating the public on exactly what we stand to lose by the blasting of the mountain and the placement of the turbines. I will post ASAP and will bring hard copies to any meetings. This will help when…

Greetings from Wilton, Maine

Hello. I'm Lisa Lindsay and I live with my family in Wilton. Wilton is working on our own wind ordinance, which I feel is not restrictive enough. For example, the set-back for an industrial wind turbine is only 1.5 times the height of the turbine from the property line.

A more immediate concern is the industrial wind project (the word "farm" should be banned when used with wind) is coming to Carthage, the next town over. This project consisting of 19 industrial scale…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
