LUPC staff say CMP corridor project complies with rules

The Land Use Planning Commission is scheduled to meet Jan. 8 to render a decision on the controversial power corridor.

In a Dec. 30 memo, staff from the Land Use Planning Commission said the power line, called New England Clean Energy Connect, is an allowed use in development districts as planned, as long as CMP follows plans to limit impact on wetlands and recreational areas.

In the protected Kennebec River Gorge and Appalachian Trail, CMP showed there were no…

Thorium

One keeps hearing about Thorium as a possible breakthrough energy source. It would appear there could be something to it. Certainly, given the vast amounts of money invested in other sources of energy it would not seem far-fetched to think that entrenched interests would want to keep Thorium down. What if the subsidies given to the failed energy source of wind power were instead directed to Thorium or other potential true breakthrough energy sources? Do we want to direct resources into…

BDN - Inside a lawmaker’s bid for Maine to seize control of its largest electric companies

By Josh Keefe, Maine Focus Reporter

December 23, 2019 6:00 am

On an unusually cold November night, Rep. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, co-chair of the legislative committee charged with regulating the state’s utilities, stood in the auditorium at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham. Before a crowd of roughly 60 people, he explained his plan to seize control of the Maine electric grid from the state’s two largest electric companies and their foreign shareholders.

Berry introduced…

Natural Gas Companies Form PAC To Fight CMP’s Proposed Transmission Project

Two national companies that operate natural gas plants in Maine are stepping into the fight over Central Maine Power’s power line proposal for western Maine. They’ve created a new political action committee supporting a potential ballot item aimed at killing the CMP project.

The new PAC is called Mainers for Local Power, and it will be funded by two Texas-based companies, Calpine and Vistra. Calpine owns a natural gas electricity generation plant in Westbrook, and Vistra owns one in…

James LaBrecque: "There's a lot of people on the take" (5 Year Energy Prediction)

Solar and wind bills, subsidies, mandates etc., brought to us by layer upon layer of dysfunctional agenda-driven government will create never seen before burdens on Mainers. These burdens will have the greatest effect on the folks who can least afford it.

Listen to today's important 14 minute WVOM audio for James LaBrecque's five year prediction of where electricity costs are headed. While each new bill, subsidy, mandate, etc. is always sold to Mainers as representing a supposed small…

U.S. Congress has declined to extend a $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles

General Motors and Tesla have been pushing for more than a year for extension of the credit, which phases out once an automaker hits 200,000 vehicles sold, and many lawmakers had been pushing to include the extension. The tax credit is aimed at defraying the cost of electric vehicles that are more expensive than similarly sized internal combustion engine vehicles.

Both GM and Tesla have already hit 200,000 EV sales. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat who authored a proposal to…

Terra-Gen Redwood Project shot down in Flames!

A different kind of fire was applied to Terra-Gen corporation 12.17.19 by the Board of Supervisors of tiny (140,000 people) Humboldt County.

Four to One against a project offering forty-seven 600 foot high monsters on top of seismically active ridges in the Cape Mendocino Bird Flyway - truly what's "not to like" about that - and a company which drops money left and right to change people's minds and even offered the Wiyot people one million dollars (1/10th of the total tax…

750 Billion Rea$on$ Why Goldman Is Rooting For Greta Thunberg's Success

Having lost much of its central banker incubation skills over the past decade, and handing over the crown of Wall Street's most profitable trading desk to Morgan Stanley, in recent years Goldman Sachs has been best known for enabling and profiting wildly from Malaysia 1MDB criminal fraud, which culminated with the arrest of former Malaysia PM Razak, but not before Goldman made billions in illicit profits from selling bonds offered by the country's sovereign wealth fund.

Does Maine Tourism Office Want to Cripple Cars?

In a state that relies on driving and tourism, some wish to make automobile use far more costly. While this article seemingly attempts to create justification for toxin-producing solar and toxin-producing electric car batteries for a more electricity-reliant future, as usual, there's not a single mention of nuclear power.

Gulf of Maine: New Task Force Will Consider Leases For Offshore Wind Energy Developers

By Fred Bever 12/12/19

A new task force will convene for the first time Thursday to consider how and where to lease potentially vast swathes of the Gulf of Maine to offshore wind-energy developers. The outcome could have big consequences for Maine's fishing industry, and for the state's role in the next wave of renewable energy development.

An earlier round of auctions awarded leases in federal waters off southern New England, where several large-scale wind projects…

Hydro-Quebec Gears Up For Political Battle Over CMP's Proposed Transmission Line

Hydro-Quebec, the Canadian energy company poised to supply hydropower to a proposed transmission line through western Maine, is joining a campaign to defeat a referendum that could scuttle the $1 billion project at the ballot box next year.

The company’s relationship with the provincial government of Quebec could draw protests from project opponents who see it as a foreign attempt to influence an election.

However, the Hydro-Quebec effort appears to be legal because Maine…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
